Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London built in 1886–1894. The bridge crosses the River Thames close to the Tower of London and has become an iconic symbol of London. Tower Bridge is one of five London bridges now owned and maintained by the Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust overseen by the City of London Corporation. It is the only one of the Trust's bridges not to connect the City of London directly to the Southwark bank, as its northern landfall is in Tower Hamlets. More on the Tower Bridge

The River Thames is a river that flows through southern England. It is the longest river entirely in England and the second longest in the United Kingdom, after the River Severn. While it is best known for flowing through London, the river also flows alongside other towns and cities, including Oxford, Reading, Henley-on-Thames and Windsor. In an alternative name, derived from its long tidal reach up to Teddington Lock in south west London, the lower reaches of the river are called the Tideway. The section of the river running through Oxford is traditionally called the Isis. More on The River Thames

Karl Theodor Wagner (Wien 1856 - Perchtoldsdorf 1921) - Austrian painter, landscape painter and author of port views and scenes from the Dutch canals. Well-known paintings of the artist testify to his many journeys - to Italy (eg landscapes from the Lake Lugano, landscapes from the south), the Netherlands, Belgium (numerous wharves, flower markets) or to London (views of the Thames and Tower Bridge). His works - mostly painted with oil, rarely watercolor - often appear at art auctions. More on Karl Theodor Wagner

Circle of LUDOLF BACKHUYSEN, (Emden 1630 – 1708 Amsterdam)
“A Dutch man-of-war in Rough Seas with a fishing boat in the foreground,
further shipping beyond”
Oil on canvas
32.8 x 29.2 cm
Private collection

Ludolf Backhuysen, one of the leading marine painters of the Dutch
Golden Age. He was fascinated with light and how it illuminates the rolling waves of rough seas. More on this work

Ludolf Bakhuizen (28 December 1630 – 17 November 1708) was a German-born Dutch painter, draughtsman, calligrapher and printmaker. He was the leading Dutch painter of maritime subjects after Willem van de Velde the Elder and Younger left for England in 1672. He also painted portraits of his family and circle of friends.

Bakhuizen was born in Emden, East Frisia, and came to Amsterdam in about 1650, working as a merchant's clerk and a calligrapher. He discovered he had a genius for painting, and  relinquished the business and devoted himself to art from the late 1650s, initially in pen drawings. He studied first under Allart van Everdingen and then under Hendrik Dubbels, two eminent masters of the time, and soon became celebrated for his sea-pieces, which often had rough seas.

He was an ardent student of nature, and frequently exposed himself on the sea in an open boat in order to study the effects of storms. His compositions, which are numerous, are nearly all variations of one subject, the sea, and in a style peculiarly his own, marked by intense realism or faithful imitation of nature. More on Ludolf Bakhuizen

Evert Moll (1878 - 1955)  was one of the main port of Rotterdam painters. He was often found on the quay at the Waalhaven and Maashaven and there painted on its own, impressionistic way the port of Rotterdam in all its facets. Besides some lessons from Willem Maris, he was mainly self-taught. He painted many beautiful ports (but also still lifes and landscapes, eg Paris cityscapes).

In later life he had problems with alcohol. Hence his later paintings were messier and less kwaliteit.Hij stayed in London, Paris, Germany and then Rotterdam, Voorburg and The Hague. More on Evert Moll

Charles Anslow Thornley, (1859 - 1885)
Harbor in Gravesend
Oil on canvas
20.5 cm x 30.5 cm
Private collection

Gravesend is an ancient town in northwest Kent, England, situated 21 miles (35 km) east-southeast of Charing Cross on the south bank of the Thames Estuary and opposite Tilbury in Essex.

Charles Thornley, British fl 1858 - 1893, was a member of the Royal Society of British Painters, working mainly in oil. He lived in London where he exhibited widely at some of the foremost venues of his day, including the Walker Art Gallery, the Suffolk Street gallery, the Manchester Art Gallery and many others.

The artist's family name was Thornbery, but for an unknown reason he often varied his signature in different ways. Works have been identified signed; 'Thornley' with the "T" crossed; also Thornberry. Nevertheless, the style of the artist is distinct and easily recognizable for its quality and appeal.

With a focus on the natural elements of sea & sky, he gives the viewer a strong sense of the fleeting moment. More on Charles Thornley
