Eugene Segal
Yachting Scene, c. 2010
Oil on canvas.
97cm x 127cm
Private collection

Eugene Segal was influenced by the works of artists such as Rembrandt, Velasces, Van Deik, France Hals and fellow countrymen Vrubel and Serov. Segal paints with a pallet knife, directly on canvas. Born in 1967 Russia, Segal made the decision to become an artist at the early age of five, and never wavered from his dream.

Segal enrolled in Kharkov Art College, and graduated in 1986. He then served in the army. He painted portraits of generals and large-scale paintings of Soviet tanks. Immediately after being honorably discharged in 1990, Segal began showing at group exhibitions. The artist quickly received invitations from various galleries to do one-man shows. He received critical acclaim for his work, and was honored with one-man exhibitions in Ukraine’s capital Kiev, and in Moscow, Russia.

Segal’s works have become increasingly popular, and he was included in the book “Important Ukrainian Painters of XX-XXI centuries” published in 2004 by the Ukrainian National Academy of Art& Science, curated by Academician B.V. Grinev. Today, Segal resides in his hometown of Kharkov, Ukraine with his wife, Ylia.  More on Eugene Segal

Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen (November 2, 1850 – February 2, 1921) was a Danish-born American maritime artist known as the "Audubon of Steam Vessels". He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark where he attended the Royal Academy of Design before heading across the Atlantic Ocean. He arrived in the United States in August 1873 and settled in West Hoboken, New Jersey (now Union City, New Jersey), across the Hudson River from Manhattan and New York Harbor. Jacobsen got his start painting pictures of ships on safes, and as his reputation grew, he was asked to do portraits of ships by their owners, captains and crew members, with many of his works sold for five dollars.

Jacobsen painted more than 6,000 portraits of sail and steam vessels, making him "the most prolific of marine artists". Many of his commissions came from sea captains, and Jacobsen was chosen both for the accuracy of his work and his low fee. More Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen

Marshall Woodside Joyce, painter and teacher born in Medford , MA in 1912, is best known for his seascapes, ships, landscapes, and coastal scenes. His interest in the sea was nurtured by his sea-captain father and the time they spent together on his three-masted schooner.

After completing his studies at Medford High School , his love of art and the sea was more fully developed at the Art Institute of Boston, where his training prepared him for a career in both commercial and fine art. His marine illustrations, based on the whaling industry and the famous ships of Mystic, Connecticut , were used on calendars for many years. While working in Boston , Joyce taught art to adults at the Butera School of Art.

He is listed in Who's Who in American Art. Joyce's work is in the collections of the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem , MA ; the Mobile Museum of Art in Mobile , AL ; and the Ventura County Maritime Museum in Oxnard , CA . More on Marshall Woodside Joyce

01 Classic Work of Art, Marine Paintings - With Footnotes, #127

John Charles Allcot (1888-1973)
The Pamir in Sydney Harbour
Oil on Canvas Board
50x60cm
Private collection

Pamir, a four-masted barque, was one of the famous Flying P-Liner sailing ships of the German shipping company F. Laeisz. She was the last commercial sailing ship to round Cape Horn, in 1949. By 1957, she had been outmoded by modern bulk carriers and could not operate at a profit. Her shipping consortium's inability to finance much-needed repairs or to recruit sufficient sail-trained officers caused severe technical difficulties. On 21 September 1957, she was caught in Hurricane Carrie and sank off the Azores, with only six survivors rescued after an extensive search.

John Charles Allcot (1888-1973), artist, was born in Liverpool, England, son of George Allcot, mariner. Educated at Arnot Street Board School, at the age of 14 John was apprenticed to Tillotson & Son Ltd, lithographers, and attended classes at the Liverpool Institute and School of Art. In 1906 he worked in the Mersey tugboats and next year sailed as a deck-boy in the barque, Invermark. He loved painting and would scrounge ship's paint, sailcloth and handkerchiefs with which to depict the sea, ships and life on board.

Arriving in Sydney in 1909, Allcot signed on with the old clipper, Antiope. He worked in coastal, island and intercolonial vessels out of Sydney before giving up the sea in 1912. Supporting himself by painting theatre sets, he obtained commissions for ship paintings from Sydney photographers and toured the countryside, completing landscapes which he exhibited regularly with the Royal Art Society of New South Wales from 1920. About this time he formed an enduring friendship with Phyllis Zanker.

He gained widespread recognition in the 1920s with a series of oil paintings (on the founding of the Australian colonies) which were later acquired by the Australasian Pioneers' Club. Other commissions followed. Allcot also worked as an illustrator and wrote articles about the sea for the Sydney Mail. In the 1940s he painted the seas for ship-models built by the sculptor Robert Klippel. Allcot's painting of the Cutty Sark was presented to the Duke of Edinburgh in 1954.

Painting to tried and tested conventions, with impeccable attention to detail, Allcot used water-colour and gouache, and oils. His work was prolific and romantic. At a time of great change in the shipping industry, he specialized in nostalgic views of sailing ships and steamers, and found an appreciative market of ship-owners, captains, crews and their families. 01 Classic Works of Art, Marine Paintings - With Footnotes, #137

Ivan Aivazovsky  (1817–1900)
Rainbow, 1873
Oil, canvas
Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow,

The above artwork is one of the most important by Ivan Aivazovsky - it overviews the major creative periods, and highlights the greatest achievements by the artist.

The painting portrays survivors tossed in a tempestuous sea, as their ship sinks in the background after a wild storm. The colors of the atmosphere and of the ocean are muted and use a soft subdued palette of white, pink, purple and light blue; shifting in subtle shades. An almost imperceptible rainbow tinges the clarity that seeps across the sky from the right. More on this painting

Ivan Aivazovsky  (1817–1900)
Detail, Rainbow, 1873
Oil, canvas
Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow,

Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (29 July 1817 – 2 May 1900) was a Russian Romantic painter. Aivazovsky was born into an Armenian family in the Black Sea port of Feodosia and was mostly based in his native Crimea.

Following his education at the Imperial Academy of Arts, Aivazovsky traveled to Europe and lived briefly in Italy in the early 1840s. He then returned to Russia and was appointed the main painter of the Russian Navy. Aivazovsky had close ties with the military and political elite of the Russian Empire and often attended military maneuvers. He was sponsored by the state and was well-regarded during his lifetime.

One of the most prominent Russian artists of his time, Aivazovsky was also popular outside Russia. He held numerous solo exhibitions in Europe and the United States. During his almost 60-year career, he created around 6,000 paintings, making him one of the most prolific artists of his time. The vast majority of his works are seascapes, but he often depicted battle scenes, Armenian themes, and portraiture. Most of Aivazovsky's works are kept in Russian, Ukrainian and Armenian museums as well as private collections. More on Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky

Jorn Fox
Unknown
Oil on canvas
48 x 24 inches
Private collection

Jorn Fox was exposed to art at an early age by his father, an art instructor and abstract painter. Even through Jorn had studied in College he believes that his real education came from many hours he spent painting in his studio. There his canvases offered him unlimited opportunities for expression, exploration and discovery.

The varied landscapes are reoccurring theme in Jorn’s works. He is currently working on a Series of impressionist Scene’s “The Road Series” — Figurative, Coastal, Landscapes, Jazz, Captured Moments. Indeed, though he has a signature characteristic elegance of style, each of his paintings are distinct from one another, as are the various locales, people, and moments that inspire them.

Working with palette knife and brush Jorn is able to evoke serenity and stillness in his works, simultaneously creating liveiness and motion. His striking use of color, much of it pure and thickly layered, exalts and even immortalizes what he chooses to depict. Jorn is frequently referred to as a California Impressionist, yet his work possesses a singular style in contrast to his French counterparts, displays an engaging sense of balance. More on Jorn Fox

Laurits Bernhard Holst, Danish 1848-1934
Shipping off Gibraltar, c. 1876
Oil on canvas
42.8x70cm
Private collection

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It is bordered to the north by Spain. In 1704, Anglo-Dutch forces captured Gibraltar from Spain during the War of the Spanish Succession on behalf of the Habsburg claim to the Spanish throne. The territory was ceded to Great Britain in perpetuity under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. More on Gibraltar

Laurits Bernhard Holst, Danish 1848-1934 was born in the small fishing village of Borgense in Denmark. He was the son and pupil of Niels Peter H. Holst and studied at the Copenhagen Academy until the age of twenty when he sailed to New York to travel in North America and Mexico. He lived a year in Chicago before returning to Denmark in 1870. In 1873 he moved to England and lived in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, for five years, before returning to Denmark. In 1883 he moved to London to be at the centre of the Victorian art world, and from 1892 he occupied Herkomer's old studio in Chelsea. Finally in 1896 Holst settled in Bournemouth, Dorset, where he lived until his death in 1934.

Holst was almost exclusively a marine painter, treating his chosen subject in such diverse locations as Denmark, Norway, England, the Côte d'Azur, Gibraltar and the Nile at Cairo. The variety of locations allowed him to represent the sea in a broad range of temporal and atmospheric conditions, ranging from the ice-locked seas of Denmark and Norway to the sun drenched warm waters of the Mediterranean basin. As Edgcumbe Stanley observed of Holst in The Studio of 1903: "he seizes the momentary movement of the sea, that mysterious poetry of the ocean and fixes it without effort." Jean-Pierre Kunkel, Germany
Pool No. 21
Oil on Canvas
39.4 H x 39.4 W x 1.6 in

Jean-Pierre Kunkel was born 1950 in France. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg (Germany). He worked for 40 years as a freelance advertising illustrator and painter with a focus on photorealism in Hamburg. In his first creative phases he stayed in Paris and New York. There he worked as assistant to Jean-Paul Goude, which from then on decisively influenced his photorealistic way of working. „"For me it’s not a question of competing with the precision of a camera lens and transferring a 1:1 snapshot to the canvas. Rather, I am interested in the possibilities of giving the reality of the photo a completely different effect. I am working with color intensities, light reflections and surface structures to create a new reality. The painting enables me to intensify the uniqueness of the moments I captured with the camera and to adapt it to my own ideal.“ More on Jean-Pierre Kunkel

Linda Weir
SPRING LIGHT, ST. IVES HARBOUR
Oil on canvas
23 1/5 × 38 in; 59 × 96.5 cm
Private collection

St Ives is a seaside town, civil parish and port in Cornwall. The town lies north of Penzance and west of Camborne on the coast of the Celtic Sea. In former times it was commercially dependent on fishing. The decline in fishing, however, caused a shift in commercial emphasis, and the town is now primarily a popular seaside resort.

The origin of St Ives is attributed in legend to the arrival of the Irish saint Ia of Cornwall, in the 5th century. The parish church bears her name, and St Ives derives from it.

St Ives was the most important fishing port on the north coast. The pier was built by John Smeaton in 1767–70 but has been lengthened at a later date. The octagonal lookout with a cupola belongs to Smeaton's design. More on St Ives

Linda Weir was born in Manchester 1951. She gained a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Manchester Metropolitan University, then a PGCE in Art and later an MA in Fine Art from Nottingham Trent University. Her extensive teaching career between 1983 to 2003 included positions at the University of Nottingham and Manchester Metropolitan University. She was a member of Manchester Academy of Fine Art. In 2005 she moved to Cornwall and now lives and paints in St Ives. All her recent work is ‘en plein air modernist expressionistic and is mostly impasto oils. Her paintings illustrate constant change, movements, seasons, to catch a moment or moments making them live forever in the paint. Her paintings are often colourful and the paint thickly applied. Linda Weir has exhibited extensively throughout the UK including the Royal Academy Summer Shows and she is regarded as one of Cornwall’s foremost artists. More on Linda Weir

Tommaso de Simone, Italian 1805-1888
The sail and steamship HMS Pallas coming into port, c. 1884
Oil on canvas
26x39.5
Private collection

HMS Pallas was a purpose-built wooden-hulled ironclad of the Royal Navy, designed as a private venture by Sir Edward Reed, and accepted by the Board of Admiralty because, as an economy measure, they wished to use up the stocks of seasoned timber held in the Woolwich Dockyard. The fact that Woolwich was not equipped to build iron ships was also relevant.

She was built with two of her big guns on either broadside and the others mounted in the extreme bow and stern as chase guns. The small number of guns, and the low weight of the broadside, was excused on the basis that the ship's primary weapon was the ram. Pallas was the first warship in the Royal Navy to be fitted with compound expansion engines, and a high performance was expected from them.

HMS Pallas was commissioned at Portsmouth, and served with the Channel Fleet until September 1870, when she was paid off for a long (and very early) refit. She served in the Mediterranean Fleet from 1872 to 1879, and was paid off. She was retained in fourth class reserve at Devonport until sold. More on HMS Pallas

Tommaso de Simone, Italian, 1805-1888, is considered to be one of the most important ship portraitists who practiced in the Italian seaport cities. The father of noted sea painter Antonio de Simone, Tomaso specialized in oils, the majority depicting warships and merchant vessels. He also created scenes of the Battles of Lissa (1867) and Alexandria (1882).

The architectural properties of Tomaso de Simone's paintings are exceptional. His hull shapes have fullness and flexibility, his rigging shows a wealth of detail. His portrait of the American continental navy frigate constellation was proven so accurate that it was used as a guide for restoration of the ship, still afloat today in Baltimore. From an artistic standpoint, his paintings are richly executed and dramatically appealing. More on Tommaso de Simone
