EMILE ALBERT GRUPPE, American (1896-1978)
Gloucester Dock Workers
Oil on canvas
19 5/8 x 23 3/4 inches
Private Collection

Gloucester Quays is located next to the beautiful Historic Docks of Gloucester – one of the UK’s most inland Shipping Ports and one of Gloucester’s busiest tourist attractions. Filled with Victorian Architecture, Gloucester Docks is the perfect place to enjoy interesting views and learn about Gloucester’s History.

The Ship Canal was opened in 1827 and allowed boats to bypass a particularly winding part of the River Severn, thus making Gloucester an Inland Port. At its busiest, the Docks would have been full of narrow boats, sailing ships, steam ships and barges. In more recent years it has been featured in lots of major films, including Alice Through the Looking Glass and Amazing Grace. More on Gloucester Quays

Emile Albert Gruppé (1896–1978) was an American painter born in Rochester, New York to Helen and Charles P. Gruppé. He lived the early years of his life in the Netherlands as his father Charles Paul Gruppe, painted with the Hague school of art and acted as a dealer for the Dutch painters in the US. The family returned permanently to the states around 1913 when rumblings of World War I were brewing. All of Emile’s siblings established themselves in the arts.

Although Gruppe is best known for his variety of impressionistic landscapes, he also painted figures and portraits. His modern style was largely inherited from the French Impressionist Monet.

Gruppe's paintings are often seen in major auction galleries, such as Sotheby's, Christies, and Skinners. More on Emile Albert Gruppé

James Edward Buttersworth, (British/American, 1817-1894)
The American clipper ship Black Warrior outward bound
Oil on canvas
29 x 36 in. (73.6 x 90.4 cm.)
Private Collection

The 'Black Warrior' was a medium clipper ship launched late in 1853 from the yard Austin & Co., Damariscotta, Maine and immediately purchased by William Wilson and Son of Baltimore for $90,000. The Black Warrior was 234 feet in length, 42.5 feet in breadth, 23 feet in draft and the weight was 1828 tons. Captain Murphy was the captain until the vessel was sold. The first voyage of Black Warrior was from New York to London then on to Australia. The vessel continued on to South America and arrived back in New York June 23, 1855. Black Warrior sailed for San Francisco September 6, 1855 making the passage in 124 days and then went on to Hong Kong. In 1862, Black Warrior was sold to James Baines & Co. and went under the British flag as the City of Melbourne. More on Black Warrior

James Edward Buttersworth (1817–1894) was an English painter who specialized in maritime art, and is considered among the foremost American ship portraitists of the nineteenth century. His paintings are particularly known for their meticulous detail, dramatic settings, and grace in movement.

Buttersworth was born in London, England in 1817, to a family of maritime artists, and studied painting with his father, Thomas Buttersworth Jr., who was also noted for the genre. He moved to the United States around 1845, and settled in West Hoboken, New Jersey (now Union City, New Jersey), and also maintained a Brooklyn studio in 1854. He returned to England in 1851 for the Race for the Hundred Pound Cup that took place on 22 August 1851. His sketches and paintings of that yachting competition provide the definitive record of events in that benchmark season of sailing.

Buttersworth’s paintings of the 1893 Vigilant vs. Valkyrie II Cup match, done one year before his death, completed the chronicling of America's Cup races by oil painting just before the advent of successful photographic imagery. He was inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame in 1999. About 600 of his pieces survive today, which are found in private collections and museums all over the United States. More on James Edward Buttersworth

Henry Scott, (British, 1911-2005)
The clipper ship Ben Nevis in heavy seas
Oil on canvas
14 x 20in (35.6 x 50.8cm)
Private collection

The Ben Nevis was an iron fullrigged ship built in 1868 by Barclay, Curle & Co., Glasgow. Dimensions 218'0"×34'6"×21'0" and 1109 GRT, 1061 NRT and 999 tons under deck. The forecastle was 36 feet long and the poop 46 feet.

The Ben Nevis, built in 1868, was one of the new clippers at the time which were much faster than older ships.  “The clippers were large and speedy three-decked ships with tall, raked masts and slender, fine hulls with a large freeboard area that enabled them to plough through heavy seas when other ships were forced to heave to.”

It was set on fire and abandoned in the Atlantic after having been dis-masted. The crew was taken off by the steam ship Dungeness and landed at Penzance.

Henry Scott (British, 1911–2005)  was a British painter known for portraying historic British and American Clipper ships in full sail. Born in 1911 in the United Kingdom, Scott quickly became acquainted with several sea captains through his quest to accurately depict ships at sea. He focused particularly on the atmosphere evoked by the ocean and the movement of the vessels, giving his paintings an overall dynamic and realistic effect. Scott was also made an honorary member of the International Association of Master Mariners, the title a token of respect for his passion for nautical history. He died in 2005 at the age of 89 in the United Kingdom. More on Henry Scott

Granville Redmond, (1871-1935 California)
Seascape
Oil on canvas
17" H x 24" W
Private collection

Granville Seymour Redmond was born March 9, 1871 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died May 24, 1935 in Los Angeles, California. Redmond's family migrated from the East Coast to San Jose, California about 1874. As a result of becoming totally deaf at the age of two-and-one-half due to scarlet fever, he attended the California School for the Deaf in Fremont, California between 1879 to 1890.

His talent as an artist was recognized and encouraged early by his art instructor, and in 1890 Redmond enrolled at the California School of Design in San Francisco. He won the W. E. Brown medal of excellence, and in 1893 was awarded endowment funds that enabled him to continue his art studies at the Academie Julian in Paris.

In 1895 his huge painting "Matin d'hiver" was accepted at the Paris Salon. In 1898 Redmond moved to California, and in 1899, he married Carrie Ann Jean. The Redmonds decided to make California their home.

Deeply inspired by the California landscape, Redmond painted primarily coastal landscapes. By 1905 Redmond had become widely recognized as a leading California landscape painter, known for his impressionist landscapes of Northern and Southern California. Redmond showed a remarkable understanding of color and depth, always painting with sympathies to the delicate beauties of nature. More on Granville Seymour Redmond

01 Classic Works of Art, Marine Paintings - With Footnotes, #160

Ruth Mulvie, United Kingdom
Into the Blue
Oil on Canvas
39.4 H x 39.4 W x 2 in
Private collection

"One of the themes I often visit in my work is the seaside. This painting in particular was made after a visit to the beautiful Mediterranean island of Corsica with my mother. I love watching figures on the beach, the assorted shapes and sizes of the human form, a simple clear backdrop, and the striking contrasts of colours. My work is infused with a love of colour which sings through all of my paintings and in this one the focus is of blue, offset against the peachy pink tones of the child playing with the beach dog." Ruth Mulvie

Ruth Mulvie is a contemporary fine artist, known for her vivid palette and for the delightfully unexpected detail in her paintings. She graduated from the Glasgow School of Art and over the years comparisons have been made with Hockney. She cherishes that visceral connection that Kodachrome™ gives us with our past. That single moment frozen in time that one can look at forever. Old photographs are her initial inspiration for each new piece; a digital springboard atop which she dives into her latest delicious fantasy landscape. Mulvie’s colour choices yell and fizz. They quicken the heartbeat. Sherbet yellow next to candy pink or lime green besides turquoise, they all elevate the mood. In her paintings we are invited to join the most wonderful party or shared experience. Mulvie’s realms surprise and delight. Hers are playful, glamorous worlds with pure glee for oxygen. And in each we are granted a day in happy valley. At the heart of Mulvie’s pieces is the palpable joyfulness in her response to colour. She is at her happiest when mixing and combining paint, waiting for the thrill of the perfect shade. For her, colour is emotion, colour is memory, colour is her favourite place to be. And we are all invited. There’s no place like it. Julie Tellouche Of her own work Mulvie says: "I usually paint with oils and I dedicate a lot of time to the process of simply mixing and combining colours, hence the highly unique and distinctive palette you can see in my work. Things I love include classic beach scenes, 50’s America, vintage fashion, dancing girls, disco queens, dog walkers and more - a vast and varied array of subject matter I unite under the broad theme of “pleasure”."
