American School, early 20th century. In the early 19th century the infrastructure to train artists began to be established in America, and from 1820 the Hudson River School began to produce Romantic landscape painting that was original and matched the huge scale of American landscapes. The American Revolution produced a demand for patriotic art, especially history painting, while other artists recorded the frontier country.

After 1850 Academic art in the European style flourished, and as richer Americans became very wealthy, the flow of European art, new and old, to the US began; this has continued ever since. Museums began to be opened to display much of this. Developments in modern art in Europe came to America from exhibitions in New York City such as the Armory Show in 1913. After World War II, New York replaced Paris as the center of the art world. Since then many American movements have shaped Modern and Postmodern art. Art in the United States today covers a huge range of styles. More on American School, early 20th century

01 Marine Art, Joel Patience's The Eyru’n Makes For Open Water , With Footnotes, #313

A schooner is a type of sailing vessel defined by its rig: fore-and-aft rigged on all of two or more masts and, in the case of a two-masted schooner, the foremast generally being shorter than the mainmast. A common variant, the topsail schooner also has a square topsail on the foremast, to which may be added a topgallant. Differing definitions leave uncertain whether the addition of a fore course would make such a vessel a brigantine. More on Schooners

"Icelandic commercial fishing was done with sailing vessels until about 1900. This type of schooners no longer exist except for the very few that are reconstructed or repurposed. For the most part they we’re not used after about 1890 - 1905. Similarly, in the Pacific NW, schooners were vital in moving timber out and supplies in.

In an effort to be accurate with this painting; I found a full set of sails in a fishing village, an ice berg that was friendly enough to hold still and, small model of this type of vessel. The name on the bow is that of our very own Viking Princess and local guide.

Joel Patience: "I have done murals as large as four meters in my watercolor style, received a once on a lifetime award for an art magazine cover and am a compensated judge for events (in addition to being a volunteer Board member of a large Italian Festival.

I am self taught over most of my life. I can remember being very young and our family getting ready for vacations. My mom would issue me a stack of cards and a small pallet with three primary watercolors plus black. My task was to paint post cards of our trip and send them to relatives and friends. I still enjoy painting when on trips to this day.

I have degrees in Business Administration and separately in Commercial Art. Most of my career has been as a developer for closely held industrial and residential properties. My education and communication skills were a true asset in presentations and working with companies not familiar with the process of development in the U.S.

My paintings are scanned at high resolution so they can be used at almost any scale and application." More on Joel Patience

The wreck off Sable Island. The first side wheel steamship Britannia of the Cunard Line to the rescue

Thomas Birch (1779 – January 3, 1851), was an English-born American portrait and marine painter. He was born in London, England. He came to the U. S. in 1794, and assisted his artist father, William Birch, in preparing a 29-plate collection of engravings: Birch's Views of Philadelphia (1800). Subscribers to the series included President John Adams and Vice President Thomas Jefferson. This sold well and went into multiple editions, inspiring similar collected views of New York City, and of suburban estates surrounding Philadelphia and Baltimore. Thomas' first major painting appears to have been a view of Philadelphia from the Treaty Elm in Kensington, which was also engraved and published in 1804. He painted portraits until about 1807, when he took up marine-painting. Some of his most famous works depict naval battles of the War of 1812.

Historically, the Birches' most important work may be a circa-1801 engraving documenting the unfinished U.S. Capitol. Another, may be the painting depicting an 1812 naval battle between USS United States and HMS Macedonian, that hung in the Oval Office of U.S. President John F. Kennedy. More on Thomas Birch
