Arthur Quartley (May 24, 1839 – May 19, 1886) was an American painter known for his marine seascapes.

Quartley was born in Paris and lived there to the age of twelve, when his family moved to Baltimore, Maryland. He studied drawing with his father Frederick William Quartley, who was an English engraver. At age 17, Arthur was apprenticed to a sign painter in Baltimore.

In 1862 Quartley began painting marine seascapes of Chesapeake Bay, and progressively spent more and more time in that pursuit.

Quartley moved to New York City in 1875. New York at that time had become a premier center for notable painters. From there he painted seascapes of Long Island bays, New York Harbor, the New Hampshire Isle of Shoals, and Naragansett Bay in Rhode Island.

Quartley was a founding member of The Tilers; a group of artists and writers They met frequently to exchange ideas and decorate ceramic tiles in promotion of their works. They also took excursions for painting, such as the 1878 pilgrimage to Eastern Long Island by Quartley and ten others. The journalist and philanthropist John W. McCoy promoted the careers of Quartley and of his friend, the sculptor William H. Rinehart.

In the year 1876 Quartley was elected to the National Academy. Quartley's prominence during his lifetime is illustrated by his inclusion as one of 68 painters in the publication American Painters (1880). More on Quartley

01 Marine Painting - Henri Lebasque's Véranda sur la Plage de Cannes/ Veranda on Cannes Beach, with Footnotes, #367

Henri Lebasque, (French, 1865–1937)
Véranda sur la Plage de Cannes/ Veranda on Cannes Beach, c. 1922
Oil on canvas

The beaches in Cannes can be divided into public and private. Private ones have plenty of amenities (lockers, sun loungers, waiter service) and are closest to La Croisette – Cannes’ main boulevard. They come at a cost, though. The public spots are natural and more minimalist, but some have showers and restaurants close by.

Henri Lebasque (25 September 1865 – 7 August 1937) was a French post-impressionist painter. He was born at Champigné (Maine-et-Loire). He started his education at the École régionale des beaux-arts d'Angers, and moved to Paris in 1886. Around this time, Lebasque met Camille Pissarro and Auguste Renoir, who later would have a large impact on his work.

Lebasque's vision was coloured by his contact with younger painters, especially Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard, founders of the Nabis' Group. From his first acquaintance with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, Lebasque learnt the significance of a colour theory which stressed the use of complementary colours in shading.

Lebasque was a founding member of the Salon d'Automne in 1903, with his friend Henri Matisse, and exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. Two years later, a group of artists exhibited there including Georges Rouault, André Derain, Henri Ottmann, Édouard Vuillard, and Matisse.

His time in South of France would lead to a radical transformation in Lebasque’s paintings, changing his colour palette forever. Other travels included the Vendée, Normandy, and Brittany. More Henri Lebasque

Reuven Rubin (November 13, 1893 – October 13, 1974) was a Romanian-born Israeli painter.  He was born in Galaţi to a poor Romanian family. He was the eighth of 13 children. In 1912, he left for Ottoman-ruled Palestine to study art at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. Finding himself at odds with the artistic views of the Academy's teachers, he left for Paris, France, in 1913 to pursue his studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. At the outbreak of World War I, he was returned to Romania, where he spent the war years.

In 1921, he traveled to the United States with his friend and fellow artist, Arthur Kolnik, with whom he had shared a studio in Cernăuţi. In New York City, the two met artist Alfred Stieglitz, who was instrumental in organizing their first American show at the Anderson Gallery. Following the exhibition, in 1922, they both returned to Europe. In 1923, Rubin emigrated to Mandate Palestine.

In Palestine, he became one of the founders of the new Eretz-Yisrael style. Recurring themes in his work were the biblical landscape, folklore and people, including Yemenite, Hasidic Jews and Arabs. He died in Tel Aviv in October 1974. More Reuven Rubin

02 Marine Paintings - Tristram Hillier's Portuguese Trawlers, with Footnotes, #362

Tristram Hillier, R.A. (1905-1983)

Tempera on canvas

The Portuguese-class trawlers of World War II were naval trawlers, built in Portugal for the Royal Navy.

These vessels were built in several Portuguese yards, and offered by Portugal to the Royal Navy. This aid to the British war effort solicited protests by Nazi Germany, since, officially, Portugal was a neutral country.

After the war the ships were sold, most of them becoming mercantile vessels, some under the Portuguese flag. More on Portuguese Trawlers
