Thomas Jacques Somerscales
A bathing party, HMS. Clio, c. 1902
Oil on canvas
24 1/2 x 18 1/4in (62.3 x 46.5cm)
Private collection

HMS Clio was a Cadmus-class sloop of the Royal Navy. She was launched in 1903, saw active service in the Middle East during World War I, was briefly involved in the British campaign against the Mad Mullah and was sold at Bombay in 1920.

Clio started her career on the Australia Station, where she arrived in May 1904. In July she made an Island trip and visited Nouméa, Suva, Tonga. After visiting Mangain, Aitutaki, and other islands, the Clio proceeded to Tahiti. After blasting passages through the coral reefs at Savage Island and other islands she reached Auckland in September and stayed for two months in New Zealand waters. In February she finally returned to Sydney.

In 1908, the Clio transported British journalist Ernest Bethell from Chemulpo to Shanghai to serve a sentence of imprisonment for inciting Koreans to oppose Japanese rule of Korea.

In late 1914 she transferred to the Middle East and was in Port Said by the beginning of January 1915. At the end of that month she moved into the Suez Canal and was active in the defence of the canal against Turkish troops. She was hit by two heavier shells, but suffered no casualties. She formed part of the British expeditionary force in the Shatt-al-Arab in April 1915, and in 1917 served in operations off Aden. At Dhubab in May. At Ibn Abbas landings were carried out to punish smuggling.

In December 1919, after commissioning at Gibraltar, she took part in the campaign against Mohammed Abdullah Hassan ("the Mad Mullah"). Sailors were landed, but by late February the campaign was complete

She was sold at Bombay on 12 November 1920. More on HMS Clio

Thomas Jacques Somerscales (born in Kingston upon Hull on 29 October 1842; died 27 June 1927) was an English marine painter. He is also considered a Chilean painter as he began his career there and many of his landscapes evoke the region.

His father was a shipmaster, who sketched, and his uncle was an amateur painter. However he had no formal training as an artist and originally became a teacher in the Royal Navy. He also traveled around the Pacific and while teaching in Valparaíso he started working as a professional painter. By 1893 he was still referred to as a "little known artist" but had gained some praise. More on Thomas Jacques Somerscales

01 Classic Work of Art, Marine Paintings - With Footnotes, #251

Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky, 1817-1900
Abandoning Ship, c. 1882
Oil on canvas
70 by 110.5cm, 27¾ by 43¼in.
Private collection

While stormy seas, sinking ships and survivors in lifeboats are common themes in Aivazovsky’s work, the absence of horizon and sky in this painting is very unusual. The tightly cropped composition draws the viewer in and increases the drama of the scene, further enhanced by the striking reflection of light on the waves.

The unusual composition is not the result of the canvas having been cut-down at a later stage but was indeed intended by the artist. More on this painting

Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (29 July 1817 – 2 May 1900) was a Russian Romantic painter. Aivazovsky was born into an Armenian family in the Black Sea port of Feodosia and was mostly based in his native Crimea.

Following his education at the Imperial Academy of Arts, Aivazovsky traveled to Europe and lived briefly in Italy in the early 1840s. He then returned to Russia and was appointed the main painter of the Russian Navy. Aivazovsky had close ties with the military and political elite of the Russian Empire and often attended military maneuvers. He was sponsored by the state and was well-regarded during his lifetime.

One of the most prominent Russian artists of his time, Aivazovsky was also popular outside Russia. He held numerous solo exhibitions in Europe and the United States. During his almost 60-year career, he created around 6,000 paintings, making him one of the most prolific artists of his time. The vast majority of his works are seascapes, but he often depicted battle scenes, Armenian themes, and portraiture. Most of Aivazovsky's works are kept in Russian, Ukrainian and Armenian museums as well as private collections. More on Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky

01 Work of Marine Paintings - With Footnotes, #250

Charlotte Berend-Corinth, (1880 - 1967)
Sea surf in Santa Barbara
Gouache on Japan, c. 1945
44 x 59,8 cm.
Private collection

Berend-Corinth moved to Santa Barbara, California, where she lived from 1940 to 1945. Painterly she devoted herself - as in this work - the local landscape. Almost like a woodcut, she reproduces the sea surf at Santa Barbara in many color areas. Lively details like the birds in the foreground loosen up the flat composition very successfully. More on this painting

Santa Barbara is a coastal city in and the county seat of Santa Barbara County in the U.S. state of California. Situated on a south-facing section of coastline, the longest such section on the West Coast of the United States, the city lies between the steeply rising Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Santa Barbara's climate is often described as Mediterranean, and the city has been promoted as the "American Riviera". More on Santa Barbara

Charlotte Berend-Corinth (25 May 1880 – 10 January 1967) was a female German painter and artist in the Berliner Secession. She was married to German painter Lovis Corinth.

Charlotte Berend studied fine arts at the Royal School of Art in Berlin and the Berliner Kunstgewerbemuseum. In 1901, she was a student at the private art school of Lovis Corinth, who fell in love with her. She became his model for a number of paintings. On 26 March 1903, she married Corinth and changed her name to Berend-Corinth.

Berend-Corinth began exhibiting her paintings at the Berliner Secession in 1906. She joined the Secession in 1912. She painted book illustrations and portraits. In the 1920s she supported young artists from the theatres in Berlin. In 1919 Lovis Corinth bought a house in Urfeld at Walchensee where he and his wife could retire from their life in Berlin. It was here, in her lakeside home at Urfeld, where she painted landscapes, portraits and still lifes and more and more retired from the active arts scene. Her husband died in 1925 from pneumonia during a journey to the Netherlands.

Berend-Corinth emigrated in 1933 to the United States of America, where her son Thomas was already living in New York City. In 1958 she published a book of the complete paintings of Lovis Corinth, which became a standard work and is in use today in a 1992 edition from Béatrice Hernad.

Berendt-Corinth died in 1967. More on Charlotte Berend-Corinth

Nyack is a village located primarily in the town of Orangetown in Rockland County, New York, United States. Incorporated in 1872, it retains a very small western section in Clarkstown. It is an inner suburb of New York City lying approximately 19 miles (31 km) north of the Manhattan boundary near the west bank of the Hudson River, situated north of South Nyack, east of Central Nyack, south of Upper Nyack, and southeast of Valley Cottage.

Named after the Native Americans who resided there before European colonization, the village consists mostly of low-rise buildings lying on the hilly terrain that meets the western shore of the Hudson River.  More on Nyavk

Francis Augustus Silva, 1835 - 1886; was born in New York City in 1835. Silva never received formal training as an artist but manifested artistic talent from an early age. At thirteen he exhibited ink drawings at the Annual Fair of the American Institute of the City of New York. He set up his first studio in 1858, but his career as a painter was put on hold when he joined the New York militia and served in the Civil War. In 1868, Silva was discharged from the military. The same year, he had his first exhibit at the National Academy of Design, which marked the start of his painting career.

Throughout most of the 1870s Silva kept a studio in New York City and took frequent painting trips along the East Coast. He developed his brand of dramatically lit, atmospheric Luminism from painting marine subjects  His fondness for harbor views surrounding his native city was evidenced in the boat and shipwreck scenes of Brooklyn and Long Island he exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association exhibitions (1869–1885). Around 1880 Silva moved to Long Branch, New Jersey but kept a studio in the famous Tenth Street Studio Building in New York City. He painted scenes along the New Jersey coasts until his death in 1886. More on Francis Augustus Silva

01 Classic Works of Marine Paintings - With Footnotes, #248

FÉLIX ZIEM, (1821-1911)
Port of Antwerp, c. 1892
Lavis of ink and heightened gouache on paper
17 x 24 CM - 6 11/16 x 9 7/16 in.
Private collection

The Port of Antwerp in Flanders, Belgium, is a port in the heart of Europe accessible to capesize ships. It is Europe’s second-largest seaport, after Rotterdam. Antwerp stands at the upper end of the tidal estuary of the Scheldt. The estuary is navigable by ships of more than 100,000 Gross Tons as far as 80 km inland. Like Hamburg, the Port of Antwerp's inland location provides a more central location in Europe than the majority of North Sea ports. Antwerp's docks are connected to the hinterland by rail, road, and river and canal waterways. As a result, the port of Antwerp has become one of Europe's largest seaports, ranking second behind Rotterdam by total freight shipped.

Antwerp's potential was recognized by Napoleon Bonaparte and he ordered the construction of Antwerp's first lock and dock in 1811. Called the Bonaparte Dock, it was joined by a second dock - called the Willem Dock after the Dutch King - in 1813. More on The Port of Antwerp

Félix Ziem (February 26, 1821 – November 10, 1911) was a French painter in the style of the Barbizon School. He was born Félix-Francois Georges Philibert Ziem in Beaune in the Côte-d'Or département of the Burgundy région of France. His mother was a native of Burgundy who had married an immigrant. Originally, Ziem planned to be an architect and studied at the School of Architecture in Dijon, and for a time he worked as an architect. In 1839 he moved to Marseilles, where he received some informal instruction in painting from Adolphe Monticelli. Painting developed from a hobby into a career following a visit in 1841 to Italy, where he fell in love with the city of Venice, a place that would become the source for many of his works, and to which he returned annually until 1892. Apart from Venetian scenes, he also painted many still lifes, portraits, and landscapes from a variety of places including Constantinople, Martigues, Cagnes-sur-Mer and his native Burgundy. More on Félix Ziem

01 Work, Marine Paintings - With Footnotes, #247

William Thon, (1906-2000)
Running Home
18 x 23 3/4 in.
Private collection

Thon was born in New York City in 1906. He spent his childhood summers camping on Staten Island. He joined the Navy during World War II, and shortly after the war won the Rome Prize, a fellowship to the American Academy in Rome. He later became a trustee of the Academy. In 1951, Thon received a grant from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He taught painting at Ohio University, and he painted aspects of the Apollo Space Program for the NASA Fine Arts Program.
William Thon had no formal art training apart from 30 days at the Art Students League. He discovered his individual style through trial and error. He began painting in oil in a fairly realistic mode, but during his stay at the American Academy in Rome he discovered watercolor as a serious medium and began to loosen his style some. His work became more abstract, although the sources were still recognizable. Perhaps the major breakthrough for his painting came with the discovery of an abandoned quarry near his home in Maine. Here he painted spidery trees with rectilinear slabs of granite interspersed, such as in Midnight Quarry. While still based in nature, these were by far the most abstract of his paintings thus far.
Thon died in 2000. More on William Thon
