"Although Nicholas Takis enjoyed all of the luxuries of a millionaire's son only a few years ago and today is selling his paintings for what he can get, the change in his fortune doesn't bother him. He's as "happy now as I ever was,"  Evening Journal, 1930

Nicholas Takis  (1903-64) was born in 1903 and was predominantly influenced creatively by the 1920s growing up. Key artistic developments that had been established in the earlier part of the 20th century continued to be worked on during the 1920s and 1930s. During this period the careers of many inspiring and pioneering artists began to flourish, yet at the same time there was an atmosphere of consideration and solemnity following the horrors of the First World War. Major shifts in politics were taking place worldwide, and Marxism took a strong hold as an ideology amongst artist groups and communities. Due to its cultural importance, Surrealism spread as an ideology on an international scale, and became the most prominent theme of the pictorial arts in the 1920s.

The Bauhaus movement developed during this time and focused on a unification of all modes of art, working towards the idea of the ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’. The liberal politics of the Weimar Republic in Germany empowered this movement to blossom and flourish and develop further. The leading focus for art during this time was on Freudian theory and the human subconscious, and these ideas were best portrayed by artists including Salvador Dali, Giorgio de Chirico, Andre Breton, Rene Magritte and Paul Delvaux, whilst in Paris, artists such as Brancusi, Modigliani and Soutine developed methods of art which were vivid and dynamic. More on Nicholas Takis

Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen (November 2, 1850 – February 2, 1921) was a Danish-born American maritime artist known as the "Audubon of Steam Vessels". He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark where he attended the Royal Academy of Design before heading across the Atlantic Ocean. He arrived in the United States in August 1873 and settled in West Hoboken, New Jersey (now Union City, New Jersey), across the Hudson River from Manhattan and New York Harbor. Jacobsen got his start painting pictures of ships on safes, and as his reputation grew, he was asked to do portraits of ships by their owners, captains and crew members, with many of his works sold for five dollars.

Jacobsen painted more than 6,000 portraits ofAntonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen's Portrait of the Fluminenses, making him "the most prolific of marine artists". Many of his commissions came from sea captains, and Jacobsen was chosen both for the accuracy of his work and his low fee. More Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen

Michael Peter Ancher (9 June 1849 – 19 September 1927) was a Danish realist artist. He is remembered above all for his paintings of fishermen and other scenes from the Danish fishing community in Skagen. Ancher was born on the island of Bornholm. He attended school in Rønne but was unable to complete his secondary education as his father ran into financial difficulties. In 1866, he met the painters Theodor Philipsen and Vilhelm Groth. Impressed with his own early work, they encouraged him to take up painting as a profession. In 1871, he spent a short period at C.V Nielsen's art school as a preliminary to joining the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen later in the year. Although he spent some time at the academy, he left in 1875 without graduating.

He achieved his artistic breakthrough in 1879 with the painting Vil han klare pynten (Will He Round the Point?). Michael Ancher's works depict Skagen's heroic fishermen and their dramatic experiences at sea. More on Michael Peter Ancher
