Robert Russ (1847, Vienna-1922, Vienna) was best known for watercolors, architectural views, urban genre scenes and landscapes with figures painted in the pure, classical style. Russ was born into a family of artists - both his father, Franz Russ and brother, the portrait and genre painter Franz Seraph Russ.

He began studying at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Albert Zimmermann, who headed the department of landscape art. Among his colleagues were Emil Jakob Schindler, Eugen Jettel und Rudolf Ribarz. Robert exhibited during his studies at the Vienna Academy and the Austrian Art Association. From 1868 he was among the members of the Wien Künstlerhaus (Vienna art exhibition building).

In 1871, Russ started teaching landscape painting at the Vienna Academy. Winning the Reichl Prize in 1880, Russ was elected an honorary member of the Vienna Academy by 1881.

Robert Russ drew inspiration for his work from rich Austrian and Italian landscapes and is credited for having a profound influence on Austrian landscape painting in the last third of the 19th century before his death in 1922.

His works hang at the Villa Borghese and Gardens in Rome, in Gratz, Vienna and many other museums around Europe. More on Robert Russ

Spyros Vassiliou (1903- 03.22.1985) was a Greek painter, printmaker, illustrator, and stage designer. He became widely recognized for his work starting in the 1930s, when he received the Benaki Prize from the Athens Academy. The recipient of a Guggenheim Prize for Greece (in 1960), Spyros Vassiliou's works have been exhibited in galleries throughout Europe, in the United States, and Canada. More on Spyros Vassiliou

Joseph Mallord William Turner, RA (baptised 14 May 1775 – 19 December 1851) was an English Romanticist landscape painter. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting.

Although renowned for his oil paintings, Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting. He is commonly known as "the painter of light" and his work is regarded as a Romantic preface to Impressionism. More on Joseph Mallord William Turner

Scheveningen is one of the eight districts of The Hague, Netherlands. The earliest reference to the name Sceveninghe goes back to around 1280.

The village was continuously hit by storms. After this last storm, the villagers decided to build a harbour. Until then, the fishing boats had had a flat bottom, and were pulled up the beach. By around 1870, over 150 of these boats were in use. Once the harbour had been constructed in 1904, more modern ships replaced the flat bottoms. More on Scheveningen

George Willem Opdenhoff was born in Fulda (Germany) in 1807, he died in The Hague in 1873. He was a pupil of the landscape painter A. Schelfhout and J.C. Schotel who painted seascapes. He lived and worked in Breda from 1835 to 1837. After traveling to the French coast in 1837, he settled in Rotterdam between 1837 and 1842. About 1842 he moved to The Hague. He painted seascapes, beach scenes and riverscapes. He exhibited in The Hague between 1835 and 1867 and Rotterdam in 1873. His work is included in Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. A yawl is a two-masted sailing craft whose mainmast is taller than the mizzen mast (or aft-mast). Compared to a similar sized ketch, a yawl's mizzen mast is set further aft and its mizzen sail is smaller.


Historically, the yawl was a commercial working vessel, but today, the yawl is a fore-and-aft rigged pleasure yacht. In Europe yawls are much less common than the more popular ketch. More on the yawl

Andres Vivo: "Painting the sea and sky provides me with the perfect excuse to express myself in my love of color and bold strokes. The abstract aspect of my paintings enables me to experiment and get lost in the imagery it evokes, while allowing the viewer to interpret the work through their own feelings and emotions. There is nothing shy about the sea nor in my work!", says the artist. Having honed his craft for more than 30 years, Vivo's body of work encompasses various themes, from realistic and semi-abstract landscapes, seascapes and beaches, to abstract human forms and shapes. His preferred technique is oil on canvas or board using palette knives and brushes, with bold strokes and colors. For many years, he held the position of Director of The Painters & Sculptors Association of Uruguay. Vivo currently heads his own atelier, located in Montevideo, where he teaches art and exhibits his paintings. His work is included in private and corporate collections worldwide.
