Granville Redmond, (1871-1935 California)
Seascape
Oil on canvas
17" H x 24" W
Private collection

Granville Seymour Redmond was born March 9, 1871 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died May 24, 1935 in Los Angeles, California. Redmond's family migrated from the East Coast to San Jose, California about 1874. As a result of becoming totally deaf at the age of two-and-one-half due to scarlet fever, he attended the California School for the Deaf in Fremont, California between 1879 to 1890.

His talent as an artist was recognized and encouraged early by his art instructor, and in 1890 Redmond enrolled at the California School of Design in San Francisco. He won the W. E. Brown medal of excellence, and in 1893 was awarded endowment funds that enabled him to continue his art studies at the Academie Julian in Paris.

In 1895 his huge painting "Matin d'hiver" was accepted at the Paris Salon. In 1898 Redmond moved to California, and in 1899, he married Carrie Ann Jean. The Redmonds decided to make California their home.

Deeply inspired by the California landscape, Redmond painted primarily coastal landscapes. By 1905 Redmond had become widely recognized as a leading California landscape painter, known for his impressionist landscapes of Northern and Southern California. Redmond showed a remarkable understanding of color and depth, always painting with sympathies to the delicate beauties of nature. More on Granville Seymour Redmond

01 Classic Works of Art, Marine Paintings - With Footnotes, #160

Ruth Mulvie, United Kingdom
Into the Blue
Oil on Canvas
39.4 H x 39.4 W x 2 in
Private collection

"One of the themes I often visit in my work is the seaside. This painting in particular was made after a visit to the beautiful Mediterranean island of Corsica with my mother. I love watching figures on the beach, the assorted shapes and sizes of the human form, a simple clear backdrop, and the striking contrasts of colours. My work is infused with a love of colour which sings through all of my paintings and in this one the focus is of blue, offset against the peachy pink tones of the child playing with the beach dog." Ruth Mulvie

Ruth Mulvie is a contemporary fine artist, known for her vivid palette and for the delightfully unexpected detail in her paintings. She graduated from the Glasgow School of Art and over the years comparisons have been made with Hockney. She cherishes that visceral connection that Kodachrome™ gives us with our past. That single moment frozen in time that one can look at forever. Old photographs are her initial inspiration for each new piece; a digital springboard atop which she dives into her latest delicious fantasy landscape. Mulvie’s colour choices yell and fizz. They quicken the heartbeat. Sherbet yellow next to candy pink or lime green besides turquoise, they all elevate the mood. In her paintings we are invited to join the most wonderful party or shared experience. Mulvie’s realms surprise and delight. Hers are playful, glamorous worlds with pure glee for oxygen. And in each we are granted a day in happy valley. At the heart of Mulvie’s pieces is the palpable joyfulness in her response to colour. She is at her happiest when mixing and combining paint, waiting for the thrill of the perfect shade. For her, colour is emotion, colour is memory, colour is her favourite place to be. And we are all invited. There’s no place like it. Julie Tellouche Of her own work Mulvie says: "I usually paint with oils and I dedicate a lot of time to the process of simply mixing and combining colours, hence the highly unique and distinctive palette you can see in my work. Things I love include classic beach scenes, 50’s America, vintage fashion, dancing girls, disco queens, dog walkers and more - a vast and varied array of subject matter I unite under the broad theme of “pleasure”." WAGNER, KARL THEODOR, 1856 Vienna - 1921 Prechtoldsdorf
View Over the River Thames on the Tower Bridge Under Construction. 1892.
Oil on paper
35,5 x 53cm.
Private Collection

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London built in 1886–1894. The bridge crosses the River Thames close to the Tower of London and has become an iconic symbol of London. Tower Bridge is one of five London bridges now owned and maintained by the Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust overseen by the City of London Corporation. It is the only one of the Trust's bridges not to connect the City of London directly to the Southwark bank, as its northern landfall is in Tower Hamlets. More on the Tower Bridge

The River Thames is a river that flows through southern England. It is the longest river entirely in England and the second longest in the United Kingdom, after the River Severn. While it is best known for flowing through London, the river also flows alongside other towns and cities, including Oxford, Reading, Henley-on-Thames and Windsor. In an alternative name, derived from its long tidal reach up to Teddington Lock in south west London, the lower reaches of the river are called the Tideway. The section of the river running through Oxford is traditionally called the Isis. More on The River Thames

Karl Theodor Wagner (Wien 1856 - Perchtoldsdorf 1921) - Austrian painter, landscape painter and author of port views and scenes from the Dutch canals. Well-known paintings of the artist testify to his many journeys - to Italy (eg landscapes from the Lake Lugano, landscapes from the south), the Netherlands, Belgium (numerous wharves, flower markets) or to London (views of the Thames and Tower Bridge). His works - mostly painted with oil, rarely watercolor - often appear at art auctions. More on Karl Theodor Wagner

Circle of LUDOLF BACKHUYSEN, (Emden 1630 – 1708 Amsterdam)
“A Dutch man-of-war in Rough Seas with a fishing boat in the foreground,
further shipping beyond”
Oil on canvas
32.8 x 29.2 cm
Private collection

Ludolf Backhuysen, one of the leading marine painters of the Dutch
Golden Age. He was fascinated with light and how it illuminates the rolling waves of rough seas. More on this work

Ludolf Bakhuizen (28 December 1630 – 17 November 1708) was a German-born Dutch painter, draughtsman, calligrapher and printmaker. He was the leading Dutch painter of maritime subjects after Willem van de Velde the Elder and Younger left for England in 1672. He also painted portraits of his family and circle of friends.

Bakhuizen was born in Emden, East Frisia, and came to Amsterdam in about 1650, working as a merchant's clerk and a calligrapher. He discovered he had a genius for painting, and  relinquished the business and devoted himself to art from the late 1650s, initially in pen drawings. He studied first under Allart van Everdingen and then under Hendrik Dubbels, two eminent masters of the time, and soon became celebrated for his sea-pieces, which often had rough seas.

He was an ardent student of nature, and frequently exposed himself on the sea in an open boat in order to study the effects of storms. His compositions, which are numerous, are nearly all variations of one subject, the sea, and in a style peculiarly his own, marked by intense realism or faithful imitation of nature. More on Ludolf Bakhuizen

Nowadays it is home to Europe's largest port and has a population of 633.471, ranking second in the Netherlands. More

Evert Moll (1878 - 1955)  was one of the main port of Rotterdam painters. He was often found on the quay at the Waalhaven and Maashaven and there painted on its own, impressionistic way the port of Rotterdam in all its facets. Besides some lessons from Willem Maris, he was mainly self-taught. He painted many beautiful ports (but also still lifes and landscapes, eg Paris cityscapes).

In later life he had problems with alcohol. Hence his later paintings were messier and less kwaliteit.Hij stayed in London, Paris, Germany and then Rotterdam, Voorburg and The Hague. More on Evert Moll

Charles Anslow Thornley, (1859 - 1885)
Harbor in Gravesend
Oil on canvas
20.5 cm x 30.5 cm
Private collection

Gravesend is an ancient town in northwest Kent, England, situated 21 miles (35 km) east-southeast of Charing Cross on the south bank of the Thames Estuary and opposite Tilbury in Essex.

Charles Thornley, British fl 1858 - 1893, was a member of the Royal Society of British Painters, working mainly in oil. He lived in London where he exhibited widely at some of the foremost venues of his day, including the Walker Art Gallery, the Suffolk Street gallery, the Manchester Art Gallery and many others.

The artist's family name was Thornbery, but for an unknown reason he often varied his signature in different ways. Works have been identified signed; 'Thornley' with the "T" crossed; also Thornberry. Nevertheless, the style of the artist is distinct and easily recognizable for its quality and appeal.

With a focus on the natural elements of sea & sky, he gives the viewer a strong sense of the fleeting moment. More on Charles Thornley
