01 Marine Painting - John Allcot's S.S. Dorrigo, with Footnotes, #370

John Allcot, (1888 - 1973)
S.S. Dorrigo, 1922
Watercolour
20 x 30.5 cm
Private collection

SS Dorrigo was a cargo and passenger steam ship. It was built under the name of Saint Francois by the Smiths Dock Company at the South Bank in Middlesbrough on the River Tees in Northeast England for the Compagnie Navale de l'Océanie for the Pacific Island postal and general trade service, for which it sailed the waters of the Pacific from 1914 to 1921. The ship suffered minor damage during the First World War during the Bombardment of Papeete, prior to coming into the hands of the Langley Bros who placed it in the Sydney to Coffs Harbour route from 1922 to 1925. Upon the demise of the Langley Bros shipping firm in 1925 the vessel came into the service of John Burke and Co and was used for the Northern Queensland runs prior to its loss on 4 April 1926. John Charles Allcot (1888-1973), artist, was born in Liverpool, England, son of George Allcot, mariner. Educated at Arnot Street Board School, at the age of 14 John was apprenticed to Tillotson & Son Ltd, lithographers, and attended classes at the Liverpool Institute and School of Art. In 1906 he worked in the Mersey tugboats and next year sailed as a deck-boy in the barque, Invermark. He loved painting and would scrounge ship's paint, sailcloth and handkerchiefs with which to depict the sea, ships and life on board.

Arriving in Sydney in 1909, Allcot signed on with the old clipper, Antiope. He worked in coastal, island and intercolonial vessels out of Sydney before giving up the sea in 1912. Supporting himself by painting theatre sets, he obtained commissions for ship paintings from Sydney photographers and toured the countryside, completing landscapes which he exhibited regularly with the Royal Art Society of New South Wales from 1920. About this time he formed an enduring friendship with Phyllis Zanker.

He gained widespread recognition in the 1920s with a series of oil paintings (on the founding of the Australian colonies) which were later acquired by the Australasian Pioneers' Club. Other commissions followed. Allcot also worked as an illustrator and wrote articles about the sea for the Sydney Mail. In the 1940s he painted the seas for ship-models built by the sculptor Robert Klippel. Allcot's painting of the Cutty Sark was presented to the Duke of Edinburgh in 1954.

Painting to tried and tested conventions, with impeccable attention to detail, Allcot used water-colour and gouache, and oils. His work was prolific and romantic. At a time of great change in the shipping industry, he specialized in nostalgic views of sailing ships and steamers, and found an appreciative market of ship-owners, captains, crews and their families. More on John Charles Allcot

01 Painting - Marine Art, John (Jack) Robert Charles Spurling's Loch Etive. With Footnotes, #318

John (Jack) Robert Charles Spurling, British, 1870-1933
Ship "Loch Etive",  c. 1925
Gouache on board
15 x 21 inches (38 x 53.3 cm)
Private collection

The Loch Etive was a British iron full-rigged clipper ship built in Glasgow in 1877. The novelist, Joseph Conrad served as her third mate and referred to her in his novel "Mirror of the Seas": "The ship was one of those iron wood clippers that the Clyde had floated out in swarms upon the world during the seventh decade of the last century. It was a fine period in shipbuilding and also, I might say, a period of overmasting. The spars rigged up on the narrow hulls were indeed tall then, and the ship of which I think, with her colored-glass skylight-ends bearing the motto, 'Let Glasgow Flourish,' was certainly one of the most heavily-sparred specimens. She was built for hard driving, and unquestionably she got all the driving she could stand." More on Loch Etive

John (Jack) Robert Charles Spurling (1870 – 31 May 1933) was an English painter noted for nautical themes, particularly sailing ships of the 19th and 20th centuries.

John Robert Charles "Jack" Spurling was the son of an importer and grew up near the London docks, where he learned to sketch as a pastime. At the age of 16 he first went to sea as an apprentice aboard Astoria. His life nearly ended when he fell from the main upper topsail yard to the deck, he instead spent six months in a Singapore hospital. He gained his second mate's certificate after some years aboard one of Devitt & Moore's sail training vessels, and around the same time learned the art of watercolor painting, and was soon receiving commissions from other seafarers. He finished his life at sea as a sailor with the Blue Anchor line of steamers.

Spurling's second love was the stage, and promising career as an actor but success as a painter intruded: In 1921 he met Frederick Arthur Hook (died 1935), editor of The Blue Peter: The Magazine of Sea Travel, Price 1/-,[2] a magazine for sailing enthusiasts. Hook purchased much of Spurling's portfolio of work, and contracted him to supply artwork for the covers of his magazine, the first being the issue of March 1923. Edward Burtynsky (born February 22, 1955) is a Canadian photographer and artist known for his large format photographs of industrial landscapes.

Burtynsky was born in St. Catharines, Ontario. When he was 11, his father purchased a darkroom, including cameras and instruction manuals. With his father, Burtynsky learned how to make black and white prints and together with his older sister established a small business taking portraits. In the early 1970s, Burtynsky found work in printing and he started night classes in photography, later enrolling at the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute.

From the mid-1970s to early 1980s, Burtynsky formally studied graphic arts and photography. He obtained a diploma in graphic arts from Niagara College in Welland, Ontario, in 1976, and a BAA in Photographic Arts from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto, Ontario, in 1982.

Most of Burtynsky's exhibited photography was taken with a large format, field camera, on large 4×5-inch sheet film. Burtynsky's most famous photographs are sweeping views of landscapes altered by industry: mine tailings, quarries, scrap piles. He has made several excursions to China to photograph that country's industrial emergence. More on Edward Burtynsky

01 Classic Works of Art, Marine Paintings, James Kay's DEPARTURE FROM THE CLYDE - With Footnotes, #184

James Kay (22 October 1858 - 26 September 1942)
DEPARTURE FROM THE CLYDE - BOUND FOR THE FRONT
Oil on canvas
76cm x 127cm (30in x 50in)
Private collection

The River Clyde is a river that flows into the Firth of Clyde in Scotland. It is the eighth-longest river in the United Kingdom, and the second-longest in Scotland. Traveling through the major city of Glasgow, it was an important river for shipbuilding and trade in the British Empire. To the Romans, it was Clota, and in the early medieval Cumbric language, it was known as Clud or Clut, and was central to the Kingdom of Strathclyde.

The Clyde became famous worldwide for its significant contribution to yachting and yachtbuilding. More than 55 boats were built by Robertson's Yard in preparation for the First World War, and the yard remained busy even during the Great Depression in the 1930s, as many wealthy businessmen developed a passion for yacht racing on the Clyde. During World War II, the yard was devoted to Admiralty work, producing large, high-speed Fairmile Marine motor boats. More on the Clyde

James Kay (22 October 1858 - 26 September 1942) was born on the Isle of Arran. He is arguably best known for his portrayals of the sea and the ships at work on the River Clyde, Glasgow. Working in Glasgow at the same time as the Glasgow Boys rose to prominence, Kay remained on the edges of this group. Unlike his peers, Kay continued to gain great pleasure from painting the busy, gritty streets and shipyards of the 'real' Glasgow. Like many other artists at the time, Kay was influenced by the Impressionists, but a great deal of originality can be seen in his paintings. He also equipped with the ability to reflect life and capture atmosphere in his work.

The bustling shipyards of the Clyde provided Kay with great inspiration, and as can be seen in "Departure from the Clyde - Bound for the front", he was able to convey the drama of industrialisation through the smoke, grime, and water. Kay's informal style captures the activity and spectacle of the docks - there is a sense of optimism from the tightly grouped figures watching the ships depart, and the unusual composition enhances our sense as a viewer of being in the thick of the action, providing a true reflection of life in Glasgow at the time. 01 Marine Art, Giuseppe Barison's SAILING BOATS, With Footnotes, #315

Giuseppe Barison, (1853 Trieste - 1931 ibid)
SAILING BOATS BEFORE ITALIAN HARBOR TOUR
Oil on canvas
90 x 150 cm
Private collection

Giuseppe Barison (September 5, 1853 – January 7, 1931) was an Italian painter and engraver, active in Venice.

Barison found a patron in the aristocratic Anna De Rin, who placed him in apprenticeship with the painter Karl Emil Haase in Trieste, and then enrolled him in the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1872, Barison began to take lessons from the Nazarene painters Karl von Blaas and Eduard Von Engerth, and also took courses in art history from August Eisenmenger.

Returning to Trieste in 1876, the next year he participated at the Esposizione di Belle Arti, which gains him a two-year stipend from the city to study in Rome. After Rome, he spent some years in Venice. His wife Giulia, originally from Trieste, and not happily settled in Venice, successfully urged her husband to relocate to Trieste. He experienced a chilly reception there, in part due to his personality, in part due to his Venetian style of painting.

The First World War exiled Barison to the house of Roberto Amadi in Pegli, Liguria where he stayed from 1915 to 1918, and continued painting land- and sea-scapes. After the war, he returned to Trieste, and along with contemporaries Guido Grimani and Ugo Flumiani, continued to paint such themes. He often painted outdoors. In his last years Barison took on new influences. He died in Trieste on January 7, 1931. More on Giuseppe Barison

Dieppe belongs to the Pays de Caux, lying along the Alabaster Coast in the region of Normandy. It is located on the Channel coast, north of Rouen at the mouth of the Arques river and lies east of the mouth of the river Scie.

A port on the English Channel, at the mouth of the Arques river, famous for its scallops, and with a regular ferry service to Newhaven in England, Dieppe also has a popular pebbled beach, a 15th-century castle and the churches of Saint-Jacques and Saint-Remi. The mouth of the Scie river lies in the Canton of Dieppe-Ouest at Hautot-sur-Mer. More on Dieppe

François Gall (1912–1987) was a Hungarian painter. He became an impressionist painter in the pure French tradition after he moved to Paris in 1936. He was born in Kolozsvar in the former region of Transylvania on March 22, 1912 and began studying all media at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Rome while working menial jobs to secure a living. In 1939, the Hungarian government awarded Gall with a scholarship for his artistic merit.

Six years later, Francois Gall established himself in Paris and became a student of Devambez at the National Academy of Fine Arts. He greatly admired the first generation of Impressionists and adopted their concepts for his own interpretations. Parisian scenes and and portrayals of women engaged in typically feminine activities were amoung his preferred subjects. Francois was a modern impressionist, bringing his own unique personality to this most enduring style.

Gall participated in various Salon exhibitions in Paris and became a favorite with the public. In 1963, he was honoured with the Francis Smith Prize. He died in 1987. More on François Gall

01 Marine Art, American School's Ship in New York Harbor. With Footnotes, #313

American School, 19th Century
Ship in New York Harbor, circa 1890
Oil on canvas mounted to panel
18 x 24 inches
Private collection

American School, early 20th century. In the early 19th century the infrastructure to train artists began to be established in America, and from 1820 the Hudson River School began to produce Romantic landscape painting that was original and matched the huge scale of American landscapes. The American Revolution produced a demand for patriotic art, especially history painting, while other artists recorded the frontier country.

After 1850 Academic art in the European style flourished, and as richer Americans became very wealthy, the flow of European art, new and old, to the US began; this has continued ever since. Museums began to be opened to display much of this. Developments in modern art in Europe came to America from exhibitions in New York City such as the Armory Show in 1913. After World War II, New York replaced Paris as the center of the art world. Since then many American movements have shaped Modern and Postmodern art. Art in the United States today covers a huge range of styles. More on American School, early 20th century

01 Marine Art, Joel Patience's The Eyru’n Makes For Open Water , With Footnotes, #313

Joel Patience
The Eyru’n Makes For Open Water
Watercolor

A schooner is a type of sailing vessel defined by its rig: fore-and-aft rigged on all of two or more masts and, in the case of a two-masted schooner, the foremast generally being shorter than the mainmast. A common variant, the topsail schooner also has a square topsail on the foremast, to which may be added a topgallant. Differing definitions leave uncertain whether the addition of a fore course would make such a vessel a brigantine. More on Schooners

"Icelandic commercial fishing was done with sailing vessels until about 1900. This type of schooners no longer exist except for the very few that are reconstructed or repurposed. For the most part they we’re not used after about 1890 - 1905. Similarly, in the Pacific NW, schooners were vital in moving timber out and supplies in.

In an effort to be accurate with this painting; I found a full set of sails in a fishing village, an ice berg that was friendly enough to hold still and, small model of this type of vessel. The name on the bow is that of our very own Viking Princess and local guide.

Joel Patience: "I have done murals as large as four meters in my watercolor style, received a once on a lifetime award for an art magazine cover and am a compensated judge for events (in addition to being a volunteer Board member of a large Italian Festival.

I am self taught over most of my life. I can remember being very young and our family getting ready for vacations. My mom would issue me a stack of cards and a small pallet with three primary watercolors plus black. My task was to paint post cards of our trip and send them to relatives and friends. I still enjoy painting when on trips to this day.

I have degrees in Business Administration and separately in Commercial Art. Most of my career has been as a developer for closely held industrial and residential properties. My education and communication skills were a true asset in presentations and working with companies not familiar with the process of development in the U.S.

My paintings are scanned at high resolution so they can be used at almost any scale and application." More on Joel Patience

01 Marine Art, Thomas Birch's BRITANNIA to the Rescue. With Footnotes, #312

Thomas Birch, American, 1779-1851
BRITANNIA to the Rescue, c. 1843
Oil on canvas

Private collection

The wreck off Sable Island. The first side wheel steamship Britannia of the Cunard Line to the rescue

Thomas Birch (1779 – January 3, 1851), was an English-born American portrait and marine painter. He was born in London, England. He came to the U. S. in 1794, and assisted his artist father, William Birch, in preparing a 29-plate collection of engravings: Birch's Views of Philadelphia (1800). Subscribers to the series included President John Adams and Vice President Thomas Jefferson. This sold well and went into multiple editions, inspiring similar collected views of New York City, and of suburban estates surrounding Philadelphia and Baltimore. Thomas' first major painting appears to have been a view of Philadelphia from the Treaty Elm in Kensington, which was also engraved and published in 1804. He painted portraits until about 1807, when he took up marine-painting. Some of his most famous works depict naval battles of the War of 1812.

Historically, the Birches' most important work may be a circa-1801 engraving documenting the unfinished U.S. Capitol. Another, may be the painting depicting an 1812 naval battle between USS United States and HMS Macedonian, that hung in the Oval Office of U.S. President John F. Kennedy. More on Thomas Birch
