Ernest Slingeneyer (1820-1894),  Belgian
Fighting on the Sea, C. 1857
Oil on canvas
293 x 370 cm
Private Collection

The painting depicts a true incident from the war of the first French republic, as the artist remarks in the catalog of the exhibition in The Hague 1857. The French ship ‘Le Feu’ sank during a campaign in the North Sea, only five sailors managed to enter a raft. After two days they were spotted by a British ship which sent a sloop to them. But the French sailors defended themselves until death to avoid captivity. The subject of the painting with shipwrecked men, crowded together on a raft goes back to the famous painting ‘The Raft of the Medusa’ by Théodore Géricault (1819). But while Gericault chose to show a blameful, scandalous incident within the French navy, Slingeneyer decided to depict a heroic story with great pathos. More on this painting

Ernest Slingeneyer (1820-1894). His artistic training was at the academy of Antwerp by Gustave Wappers. From the beginning he prefered to paint historic themes. With only 19 years he exhibited his first painting. The colossal painting ‘Le Vengeur’, exhibited in 1845 at the ‘Salon of Brussels’, was admired by the Belgian king. He was showered with honours and received numerous orders. In 1878 he was in charge of executing 13 painting for the great hall of the ‘Academiënpalais’ in Brussels and was paid with a record payment of 122.000 Belgian Franc. His great success and influence led to a late political career in the Belgian Parliament. More on Ernest Slingeneyer

Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida, (Spanish, 1863-1923)
Net menders in Valencia, c. 1909
Oil on canvas laid down on board
15 x 22½ in. (38.1 x 57.1 cm.)
Private Collection

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (27 February 1863 – 10 August 1923) was born in Valencia. He and his younger sister were orphaned 2 years later when both their parents died from a cholera outbreak.

From an early age it was clear that Sorolla had a passion for art. Instead of academic study, the young Sorolla would spend his school days making drawings in his copybooks and by the age of 15 he was winning major prizes for his paintings at the Academy of Valencia.

By his mid 20s Sorolla had firmly established himself on the national stage and by 30 he had displayed paintings in salons and international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Venice, Munich, Berlin, and Chicago. By the turn of the century Sorolla was recognised as one of the western world’s greatest living artists, receiving gold medals in several major international exhibitions.

Over the first decade of the 20th century Sorolla’s output was incredible, both in quality and quantity. As well as painting many striking portraits, his new found wealth enabled him to devote himself more fully to painting where and what he wanted. Throughout this decade Sorolla was completing hundreds of paintings each year, often canvases of 2 metres or more painted direct on the beach.

In 1909, the Hispanic Society of America hosted an exhibition of Sorolla’s works in New York City. Of the 356 paintings on show a total of 195 were sold.

In 1911 Sorolla started work on a major commission to produce a series of vast panels celebrating the life and customs of the different regions of Spain for the Hispanic Society’s new headquarters in New York. This enormous and exhausting endeavour was to dominate the next 8 years of Sorolla's life, although he still managed to find time to paint some of his most stunning beach scenes.

Sorolla suffered a paralyzing stroke in 1920 and died three years later. More on Joaquín Sorolla

01 Classic Works of Art, Marine Paintings - With Footnotes, #205

Claudio Missagia, France
Umbrellas
Acrylic and Plaster on Canvas.Painting
39.4 H x 70.9 W x 1 in

Claudio Missagia was born in 1959 Italy. Claudio works with acrylique and plaster on canvas to produce large-scale paintings defined by a dream atmosphere. Exploring representations of chandeliers, lamps, cups and landscape scenes, Claudio plays with composition, utilising a moody colour palette to create a dream dimension to his work. He abandoned his career in business administration to realise his passion for art and to become a professional artist. Through his paintings, he wants to express his sensitivity towards the real and the profound poetry that can be witnessed in the everyday. Although he often abstracts the subjects that he depicts, what he wants to present to his viewer is his undiluted vision of reality. Claudio works with canvases made from cotton or burlap and then uses chalk and cement as the foundation for his compositions, which he usually executes in acrylic, pastels or pencil. His work has evolved over the years, from still lifes and interiors. Claudio’s more recent work explores urban landscapes and the butterfly, a symbol of his introspective self. His paintings have been shown worldwide, hosting solo shows in Siena, St Tropez, Mougins, Venice, Madrid and Germany. More on Claudio Missagia

Hendrik Willem Mesdag, 1831 - 1915, DUTCH
SHIPS AT SEA, c. 1875
Oil on panel
15 1/2 by 20 in., 39.4 by 50.8 cm
Private collection

Hendrik Willem Mesdag (23 February 1831 – 10 July 1915) was a Dutch marine painter born in Groningen. Mesdag was encouraged by his father, an amateur painter, to study art. He married Sina van Houten in 1856, and when they inherited a fortune from her father, Mesdag retired at the age of 35 to pursue a career as a painter.

He studied in Brussels with Willem Roelofs and in 1868 moved to The Hague to paint the sea. In 1870 he exhibited at the Paris Salon and won the gold medal for The Breakers of the North Sea.

In 1880 he received a commission from a Belgian company to paint a panorama giving a view over the village of Scheveningen on the North Sea coast near The Hague. With the help of Sina and students he completed the enormous painting, Panorama Mesdag,— 14 m high and 120 m around — by 1881. However, the vogue for panoramas was coming to an end, and when the company operating it went bust in 1886, Mesdag purchased the painting at auction and thereafter funding its operating losses from his own pocket.

He joined the art society of The Hague (the Pulchri Studio) and in 1889 was elected chairman. In 1903 he gave his house at Laan van Meerdervoort and his collection of paintings to the Netherlands; the house is now the Museum Mesdag. More on Hendrik Willem Mesdag
