Francisco Hernandez Monjo, Menorca 1862 - 1937, was born into a family of artists, silversmiths, and goldsmiths. At age 23 he began drawing lessons and his works then were landscapes of Mahon harbor and boats. By 1890 he moved to Barcelona where he completed his artistic training with Eliseo Meifrén at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. In 1898, the house Tasso Barcelona commissioned a collection of watercolors of warships for the book “The Spanish Armada”.

He developed a reputation as painter of sea-coasts and landscapes of Balearic island. He was also an exellent pianist, inspired composer and important folklorist. He annotated more than 60 melodies for the "Esbart Folklore de Catalunya" orchestrated for orchestra, cobla and quintet. Hastings and the sea. In the 13th century Hastings had suffered over the years from the lack of a natural harbour. Attempts were made to build a stone harbour during the reign of Elizabeth I, but the foundations were destroyed by the sea in terrible storms. The fishing boats were stored on and launched from the beach.

Edward William Cooke, R.A., F.R.S., F.Z.S., F.S.A., F.G.S. (27 March 1811 – 4 January 1880) was an English landscape and marine painter, and gardener. Cooke was born in Pentonville, London. He was raised in the company of artists. He was a precocious draughtsman and a skilled engraver from an early age, displayed an equal preference for marine subjects and published his "Shipping and Craft" – a series of accomplished engravings – when he was 18, in 1829. Cooke began painting in oils in 1833, and first exhibited at the Royal Academy and British Institution in 1835, by which time his style was essentially formed.

He went on to travel and paint with great industry at home and abroad, indulging his love of the 17th-century Dutch marine artists with a visit to the Netherlands in 1837. He returned regularly over the next 23 years, studying the effects of the coastal landscape and light, as well as the works of the country's Old Masters, resulting in highly successful paintings. He went on to travel in Scandinavia, Spain, North Africa and, above all, to Venice. In 1858, he was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Honorary Academician. . Joseph Mallord William Turner, RA (baptised 14 May 1775 – 19 December 1851) was an English Romanticist landscape painter. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting.

Although renowned for his oil paintings, Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting. He is commonly known as "the painter of light" and his work is regarded as a Romantic preface to Impressionism. More on Joseph Mallord William Turner

Henry Bernahl, (1900 - 1984)

Henry Bernahl (1900-1984) was born in England on November 10, 1900. He moved to Australia at age eleven and soon shipped out as a seaman. While at sea, he acquainted himself with most all ocean-going craft which were later to become his painting forte. After moving to San Francisco in 1927, he worked as a towboat skipper and as a guide on the Balclutha where he maintained a studio and gallery. Joseph Edward Southall RWS NEAC RBSA (23 August 1861 – 6 November 1944) was an English painter associated with the Arts and Crafts movement.

A leading figure in the nineteenth and early twentieth-century revival of painting in tempera, Southall was the leader of the Birmingham Group of Artist-Craftsmen—one of the last outposts of Romanticism in the visual arts, and an important link between the later Pre-Raphaelites and the turn of the century Slade Symbolists.

A lifelong Quaker, Southall was an active socialist and pacifist, initially as a radical member the Liberal Party and later of the Independent Labour Party.

Southall was elected an Associate of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) in 1898 and Member in 1902. He became President of the Society in 1939 and stayed in this post until his death in 1944. More on Joseph Edward Southall

Anton Otto Fischer (February 23, 1882 – March 26, 1962) was born in Munich, Germany but orphaned as a boy, Fischer ran away to sea at 16 and spent eight years on a variety of sailing ships. In New York, he stayed to apply for American citizenship and to teach seamanship." He later served as a hand on racing yachts on Long Island Sound and worked as a model and handyman for the illustrator A.B. Frost. When he had saved enough money, he spent two years at the Academie Julian in Paris under Laurens.

Returning to the United States, Fischer sold his first picture to Harper's Weekly in 1908, around the time he moved to Wilmington to receive critiques from Pyle. Everybody's magazine sent him the first of several Jack London stories. In 1910, he began a 48-year association with The Saturday Evening Post, which included illustrating serialized characters such as Peter B. Kyne's "Crappy Ricks," Norman Reilly Raine's "Tugoat Annie," Guy Gilpatrick's "Glencannon," as well as serials for Kenneth Robert and Nordoff and Hall.

In 1942, he was given the run of Lieutenant Commander as "Artist Laureate" for the United States Coast Guard and was assigned Moth Atlantic convoy duty on the Coast Guard cutter "Campbell" during the winter of 1943. The "Campbell" was disabled during a successful attack on a German U-boat, and Fischer's dramatic paintings of this experience were published by Life magazine. The pictures are now in the Coast Guard Academy at New London, Connecticut.

In 1947, Fischer wrote and illustrated a book about his earlier sailing years, entitled Fo'c'sle Days, published by Charles Scribner's Sons. More on Anton Otto Fischer

Ships that belonged to the Aberdeen ‘White Star’ line were painted in "Aberdeen Green" with white decks and bottom. They also had a gilded streak and scroll work. Many did their time in the Australian passenger trade.

The ships painted in the traditional "Aberdeen Green" enjoyed great popularity all over the world.

Dale Byhre, ( Canadian 1956 - ), has specialized in depicting both historical and modern ships. Dale has encompassed a strong appreciation for both ships and the sea, depicting them both with accuracy and reverence. Dale Byhre's paintings are recreations of a time and place based on long hours of research and study. Whether a battleship in action during a critical moment in history or fishing docks on a peaceful morning.

Dale is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and the American Society of Marine Artists. Dale’s work is in many private and public collections, including those of the Royal Canadian Navy, the US Naval Academy Museum.

Georges Chavignaud, (1865-1944), was primarily a painter of landscapes in watercolor. He was born in Brittany, France in 1865 and studied in Paris. He came to Toronto, Ontario, in 1884, worked as art director for a publishing firm, and married a Canadian. From 1903-04 they travelled and painted, in Europe. George studied under leading artists in Belgium and was elected a member of the Society of Water Colour Painters in Belgium. In 1904 he returned to Canada settling in Meadowvale (1904) and Etobicoke (1910). Kleinberg (1918), Meadowvale (1929), and became a founding member of the Arts and Letters Club in Toronto and a member of the Ontario Society of Artists. He was elected to the Ontario Society of Artists in 1900, but resigned in protest over the work of the Group of Seven. From 1902-1918 he exhibited regularly at the Royal Canadian Academy. From1912-1916, he was principal of the Victoria School of Art and Design in Halifax. He continued to travel in Belgium, France and the Netherlands where he found renewed inspiration. He painted Canadian landscapes in the Maritimes, the Ile d'Orléans in Quebec, and in Ontario. He died at Meadowvale, north of Mississauga, in 1944. More on Georges Chavignaud

Petrus Paulus Schiedges the Elder (Dutch, 1812–1876). After his study at the Haagsche Teekenacademie, Petrus Paulus Schiedges developed into a painter of sea and river views. In the forties of the 19th century, he received advice from marine painter Louis Meijer. Schiedges was a master at displaying the different ship types that sailed on the Dutch waters at that time. Ponape was a four-masted steel–hulled barque which was built in 1903 in Italy as Regina Elena for an Italian owner. In 1911 she was sold to Germany and renamed Ponape. In 1914 she was arrested by HMS Majestic and confiscated as a war prize by the Admiralty. She was renamed Bellhouse In 1915 she was sold to Norwegian owners. In 1925, she was sold to Finland and again named Ponape serving until she was scrapped in 1936. More on Ponape

Marinus Johannes Drulman, ( Amsterdam , July 4, 1912 - Rotterdam , June 30, 1977 ), known by the pseudonym Marius de Jongere, was a Dutch watercolorist , etcher , draftsman , graphic artist and painter . He is particularly known as a painter of the Rotterdam ports.

Drulman worked and lived mainly in Rotterdam and is known by his harbor views as a typical Rotterdam painter. However, he originally came from Amsterdam.

Drulman was taught at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam. As an artist he used the pseudonym Marius the Younger; this was a reference to his stepfather, the painter and etcher Marius Janssen . Only during the German occupation did he sign his work with the name Drulman, because artists at that time were not allowed to work under a pseudonym.

His style was naturalistic - impressionistic . His most productive period in the fifties and sixties coincided with the rise of the Rotterdam ports . Drulman became famous for harbor views . In addition to ports and ships, he also painted portraits and landscapes , often of the polder landscape around his studio in Hillegersberg .

He was a member of Kunstenaarsssociëteit Rotterdam. He made trips to Belgium, Germany, France and Switzerland.

The Kamper museum , among others, owns work by Drulman. According to a number of sources, the American vice-president Lyndon B.Johnson bought five landscapes during a visit to the Netherlands in the 1960s in the studio of Drulman. More on Marinus Johannes Drulman

Kimber Lee Clark is a self-taught artist and teacher. She owned the Saturday Cove Gallery in Saturday Cove, Maine for 25 years.

She is well known for her artful abundance which plays through her paintings with color, wit, and whimsey. Whether it’s a rendition of island living, a lop sided lighthouse or bringing in the prize ”blue lobstah”, all are infused with a sense of optimism and joy. Searsport is an incorporated town and deep water seaport located at the confluence of the Penobscot River estuary and the Penobscot Bay. Searsport is Maine's second largest deep water port and is ideally located from the point of view of railroad, wood products and other development interests. More on Searsport

Waldo Peirce (December 17, 1884 – March 8, 1970) was an American painter. He was sometimes called "the American Renoir".

Peirce was born in Bangor. He attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and graduated in 1903. He then attended Harvard University.

In 1915 he joined the American Field Service, an ambulance corps that served on the French battlefields, two years before the entry of the United States into World War I. He was later decorated with the Croix de Guerre by the French government for bravery at Verdun.

He lived in Searsport, Maine. He died on March 8, 1970, in Newburyport, Massachusetts. More on Waldo Peirce

Edmond Marie Petitjean, 1844 - 1925, French, was born at Neufchâteau in the Vosges. His father, a lawyer, did not allow him to study art until he had completed courses at the Faculty of Law at Nancy. From that moment, he abandoned the law and was able to devote himself entirely to his artistic career. Success followed swiftly; his work was well received at the exhibition of the Lorraine Society of the Friends of Arts, and then, in 1873, he made a brilliant début at the salon in Paris.

He was awarded an honorable mention in 1881, and a bronze medal in 1884; hors-concours, and a silver medal in 1885; a silver medal in 1889 at the Exposition Universelle, the Legion of Honor in 1892, and a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900; he was a member of the jury and of the Committee of the Artistes Français for many years.

Yet Edmond was never satisfied with his own work:“In my painting, I have searched passionately for perfections, delicacy, tenderness of expression and tone; and I feel that it will all crumble and become insipid in the Salon where, in order to elbow one’s way in, one most by violent.”

All those aspects of nature which Petitjean loved appear in his work. He could see the picturesque detail and transcribe it in full; sensitive to color, but wary of its violence. He loved the countryside, and his vision was essentially that of a country man, his inclinations leading him to the peace of rural surroundings.

Petitjean is perhaps best known for his depiction of the countryside and villages of Lorraine and Vendée. He did, however, find inspiration further afield – in the harbors of le Hâvre, Dunkerque, les Sables d’Olonne, Dieppe, Rotterdam, Bordeaux and the neighboring coastline.
