St Ives is a seaside town, civil parish and port in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The town lies north of Penzance and west of Camborne on the coast of the Celtic Sea. In former times, it was commercially dependent on fishing. The decline in fishing, however, caused a shift in commercial emphasis, and the town is now primarily a popular seaside resort. The Gloucester fishing schooner, 123 feet, 3 inches over all, is one of the few remaining vessels of her type in the USA. They fished the Grand Banks off Newfoundland and Georges Bank outside of Cape Cod and were some of the fastest and ablest fishing vessels in the world. More on The Gloucester fishing schooner

Richard Hayley Lever, (b Adelaide, Australia 1876; d Mount Vernon, New Hampshire 1958) Australian-born American painter. In 1900 Hayley Lever traveled to England to study art, and shortly thereafter studied at the Academie Julian in Paris where Van Gogh was a major influence. Around 1912 Lever moved to America and began gaining wide recognition as an important artist. Lever is known for his marine scenes, and once in America he maintained a studio in Gloucester, Massachusetts to paint coastal life. From 1919 to 1931 Lever taught at the Art Students League New York City; and in 1933 was made full Academician at the National Academy in New York City. In 1935 Lever became the director of the Studio Arts Club in Mount Vernon, New York. A schooner is a type of sailing vessel with fore-and-aft sails on two or more masts. The most common type has two masts, the foremast being shorter than the main. While the schooner was originally gaff-rigged, modern schooners typically carry a Bermuda rig. More on schooners

Jack Lorimer Gray (April 28, 1927 — September, 1981) was a Canadian artist, known particularly for marine art.

Jack Lorimer Gray was born in Halifax and studied at the Nova Scotia School of Art and Design (NSCAD). Though a traditional painter of marine pictures in a decade known for advances in abstraction in Canada, Gray's paintings are avidly sought internationally. The appeal of his paintings has much to do with their authenticity and dynamism. Gray spent time at sea and was well-positioned to interpret in paint how vessels responded to the movement induced by wind and wave, unlike other marine painters who limited themselves to moored ships which they studied from dry land. 

Gray lived in New York in the mid-50s and was represented by Kennedy Galleries which accounts for the significant patronage he enjoyed in the U.S.  Gray moved to Maine in the late 1950s but was back in Halifax by 1961, More on Jack Lorimer Gray

A barquentine or schooner barque is a sailing vessel with three or more masts; with a square rigged foremast and fore-and-aft rigged main, mizzen and any other masts. More on the barquentine

Gazela is a wooden tall ship, built in 1901, whose home port is Philadelphia. She was built as a commercial fishing vessel, and used in that capacity for more than sixty years. She now serves as the maritime goodwill ambassador for the City of Philadelphia, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the Ports of Philadelphia and Camden, New Jersey. She has been featured in a number of films, and participated in domestic and international events. More on the Gazela

The Tagus is the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula along the border between Portugal and Spain, where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean near Lisbon. The Tagus is highly utilized for most of its course. At its mouth is a large estuary on which the port city of Lisbon is situated. More on The Tagus

Edward Brian Seago, 1910–1974; was a British painter, writer, and illustrator, born in Norwich. He was confined to bed for much of his childhood, had little formal education, and was mainly self-taught as an artist. From 1928 to 1933 he travelled with circuses in Britain and abroad, and he wrote three illustrated books on the circus in the 1930s. However, he became best known for landscapes and portraits.

During the Second World War he served as a camouflage officer and after being invalided from the army in 1944 he was invited by Field Marshal Alexander to paint scenes of the Italian campaign in 1945. In 1953 he was appointed an official Coronation artist and in 1956–7 he accompanied the Duke of Edinburgh on a world tour.  More on Edward Seago
