St Ives is a seaside town, civil parish and port in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The town lies north of Penzance and west of Camborne on the coast of the Celtic Sea. In former times, it was commercially dependent on fishing. The decline in fishing, however, caused a shift in commercial emphasis, and the town is now primarily a popular seaside resort. Richard Hayley Lever (American, 1876-1958)

The Gloucester fishing schooner, 123 feet, 3 inches over all, is one of the few remaining vessels of her type in the USA. They fished the Grand Banks off Newfoundland and Georges Bank outside of Cape Cod and were some of the fastest and ablest fishing vessels in the world. More on The Gloucester fishing schooner

Richard Hayley Lever, (b Adelaide, Australia 1876; d Mount Vernon, New Hampshire 1958) Australian-born American painter. In 1900 Hayley Lever traveled to England to study art, and shortly thereafter studied at the Academie Julian in Paris where Van Gogh was a major influence. Around 1912 Lever moved to America and began gaining wide recognition as an important artist. Lever is known for his marine scenes, and once in America he maintained a studio in Gloucester, Massachusetts to paint coastal life. From 1919 to 1931 Lever taught at the Art Students League New York City; and in 1933 was made full Academician at the National Academy in New York City. In 1935 Lever became the director of the Studio Arts Club in Mount Vernon, New York. During his lifetime he was awarded numerous medals for his artistic achievements including gold and silver from the National Academy. More on Richard Hayley Lever

St Ives is a seaside town, civil parish and port in Cornwall, England, UK. The town lies on the coast of the Celtic Sea. In former times it was commercially dependent on fishing. The decline in fishing, however, caused a shift in commercial emphasis, and the town is now primarily a popular holiday resort, notably achieving the title of Best UK Seaside Town from the British Travel Awards in both 2010 and 2011. St Ives was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1639. St Ives has become renowned for its number of artists. It was named best seaside town of 2007 by The Guardian newspaper. More on St Ives

Linda Weir was born in Manchester 1951. She gained a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Manchester Metropolitan University, then a PGCE in Art and later an MA in Fine Art from Nottingham Trent University. Her extensive teaching career between 1983 to 2003 included positions at the University of Nottingham and Manchester Metropolitan University. She was a member of Manchester Academy of Fine Art. In 2005 she moved to Cornwall and now lives and paints in St Ives. All her recent work is ‘en plein air modernist expressionistic and is mostly impasto oils. Her paintings illustrate constant change, movements, seasons, to catch a moment or moments making them live forever in the paint. Her paintings are often colourful and the paint thickly applied. Linda Weir has exhibited extensively throughout the UK including the Royal Academy Summer Shows and she is regarded as one of Cornwall’s foremost artists. More on Linda Weir

St Ives is a seaside town, civil parish and port in Cornwall. The town lies north of Penzance and west of Camborne on the coast of the Celtic Sea. In former times it was commercially dependent on fishing. The decline in fishing, however, caused a shift in commercial emphasis, and the town is now primarily a popular seaside resort.

The origin of St Ives is attributed in legend to the arrival of the Irish saint Ia of Cornwall, in the 5th century. The parish church bears her name, and St Ives derives from it.

St Ives was the most important fishing port on the north coast. The pier was built by John Smeaton in 1767–70 but has been lengthened at a later date. The octagonal lookout with a cupola belongs to Smeaton's design. More on St Ives

Linda Weir was born in Manchester in 1951, and studied at Manchester Metropolitan University, attaining a foundation in Visual Studies, a BA in Fine Art and a PGCE in Art. She went on to receive an MA in Fine Art from Nottingham Trent University.

Linda held many teaching positions between 1983 and 2003 including at the University of Nottingham and Manchester Metropolitan University. She was a member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Art and a founder member of the Manchester Artists Studio Association.

Linda won a place at Falmouth School of Art in the 1980s but was unable to take it up. Twenty-five years later, she finally arrived in West Cornwall and now lives and paints in St Ives where she produces impasto oils, all ‘en plein air’. She describes being in Cornwall as a “constant thrill” and finds it an “intensely inspiring place”.

Linda has exhibited extensively in one-woman and mixed shows across the country, most notably at the Royal Academy Summer Show. More on Linda Weir

Arthur Hayward, 1889-1971, was born at Southport, Lancashire, Hayward studied architecture at South Kensington but gave it up for painting, and subsequently studied at the Warrington School of Art.. During WWI he served with Royal Field Artillery, and returned to Newlyn, being addressed as Captain Hayward.

He joined the Committee of the NSA, serving specifically on the Entertainments sub-committee, as his organisation skills were well known. After working at Newlyn and Paul, he moved to St Ives, and established a St Ives School of Painting (c1924) of which he was the named Principal.

He played a part in St Ives and Newlyn's artistic life through the formation of an exhibiting set calling themselves the CORNWALL GROUP. More on Arthur Hayward

Ellie Hesse was born in New York in 1972 but spent most of her childhood in the Yorkshire Dales. Travel has always been an important feature of her life since then, exploring Asia and South America, as well as living and working in a number of different European countries.

Entirely self-taught, Ellie is mainly known for her vibrantly coloured townscapes, though in recent years, she has gone on to develop her art to include more figurative work, focusing on the horse in particular. Ellie uses a variety of different media and techniques, depending on the subject matter. The palette knife is her tool of preference for building up layers of texture and depth of colour.

By working intermittently on two very different subjects, Ellie has found that the two approaches seem to cross-pollinate. The looser drawing style of the equine work, feeding into the more structural work of townscapes, bringing new vitality into the painting style as well as composition, with the introduction of figures and animals. The creative tension that arises from contrasting solid, architectural forms with the fluidity of a natural and dynamic subject, creates a certain energy, keeping the painting process always fresh and exciting..
