Sir Peter Parker's Attack Against Fort Moultrie
Oil on canvas.

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation
Williamsburg, Virginia, United States of America

The Battle of Sullivan's Island or the Battle of Fort Sullivan was fought on June 28, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War. It took place near Charleston, South Carolina, during the first British attempt to capture the city from American rebels. It is also sometimes referred to as the First Siege of Charleston, owing to a more successful British siege in 1780.

The British organized an expedition in early 1776 for operations in the rebellious southern colonies of North America. Delayed by logistical concerns and bad weather, the expedition reached the coast of North Carolina in May 1776. Finding conditions unsuitable for their operations, General Henry Clinton and Admiral Sir Peter Parker decided instead to act against Charleston. Arriving there in early June, troops were landed on Long Island, near Sullivan's Island where Colonel William Moultrie commanded a partially constructed fort, in preparation for a naval bombardment and land assault. General Charles Lee, commanding the southern Continental theater of the war, would provide supervision.

The land assault was frustrated when the channel between the two islands was found to be too deep to wade, and the American defenses prevented an amphibious landing. The naval bombardment had little effect due to the sandy soil and the spongy nature of the fort's palmetto log construction. Careful fire by the defenders wrought significant damage on the British fleet, which withdrew after an entire day's bombardment. The British withdrew their expedition force to New York, and did not return to South Carolina until 1780. More

James Peale (1749 – May 24, 1831) was an American painter, best known for his miniature and still life paintings, and a younger brother of noted painter Charles Willson Peale. His father died when he was an infant, and the family moved to Annapolis. In 1762 he began to serve apprenticeships there, first in a saddlery and later in a cabinetmaking shop. After his brother Charles returned from London in 1769, where he had studied with Benjamin West, Peale served as his assistant and learned how to paint.

Peale worked in his brother's studio until January 14, 1776, when he accepted a commission in the Continental Army as an ensign in William Smallwood's regiment. Within three months he was promoted to captain, and during the next three years fought in the battles of Long Island, White Plains, Trenton, Brandywine, Germantown, Princeton, and Monmouth. He resigned his army commission in 1779, and moved to Philadelphia to live with his brother. More on James Peale

Alain Héraud
Voilier noir/ Black sailboat
Oil on paper.
61 x 46 cm
Private collection

Alain Héraud was born and raised in Paris. At the age of 12, he follows courses in the Louvre and this experience determined his artistic direction. At the age of 16, he entered the Collège d’Enseignement d’Art Graphique de Corvisart. At the end of his studies, he starts painting.

He exhibited at the Salon d’Automne du Grand Palais. It took him a few years to realise the importance of painting in his life, and decided to make a living out of it. Around the age of 40, he left Paris and settled in Bretagne to devote himself to his passion.

Alain spreads paint with a knife on canvas, paper or wood. To create his landscapes, he uses construction spatulas, that are wider and stiffer than traditional painting knives.

He draws his inspiration from his travels (Italy, Greece, Algeria, Tunisia) and from the places where he lived (Paris, Brittany). He transforms his memories into inhabited theatrical settings. His works can be contemplated as if they were travel journals. With his mind full of images, it's in his studio that he creates lights, moods and atmospheres. More on Alain Héraud

Jack Laycox, (1921 - 1984 San Francisco, CA)
"Beach at Honfleur", France
Watercolor on Arches paper
22.25" H x 29.5" W
Private collection

Honfleur is a commune in the Calvados department in northwestern France. It is located on the southern bank of the estuary of the Seine across from le Havre and very close to the exit of the Pont de Normandie. Its inhabitants are called Honfleurais.

It is especially known for its old, beautiful picturesque port, characterized by its houses with slate-covered frontages, painted many times by artists, including in particular Gustave Courbet, Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet and Johan Jongkind, forming the école de Honfleur which contributed to the appearance of the Impressionist movement. The Sainte-Catherine church, which has a bell tower separate from the principal building, is the largest church made out of wood in France.

Located on the estuary of one of the principal rivers of France with a safe harbour and relatively rich hinterland, Honfleur profited from its strategic position from the start of the Hundred Years' War. The town's defences were strengthened by Charles V in order to protect the estuary of the Seine from attacks from the English. This was supported by the nearby port of Harfleur. However, Honfleur was taken and occupied by the English in 1357 and from 1419 to 1450. When under French control, raiding parties often set out from the port to ransack the English coasts, including partially destroying the town of Sandwich, in Kent, England, in the 1450s.  More on Honfleur

Lucien Delarue, (1925 - 2011 French)
"Harbor Monte Carlo"
Oil on canvas laid to waxed canvas
18.25" H x 22" W
Private collection

By 1901 it became apparent that the Principality of Monte Carlo needed a harbour able to accommodate the large number of yachts that visited the Côte d'Azur and to help open up the commerce of the area.

The construction of a port would complete the modernisation of the Principality and would at the same time be an important new source of prosperity. In order to maximize the space available, it was decided to build two quays, which still serve as the main walles of the harbour today. The work started on the 2nd July 1901.

The rock needed for the construction of the quays was taken from an area next to the sea, to the east of Cap Ferrat in the Bay of Lilong, five miles to the West of Monaco. The project was completed in 1926. More on the harbor of Monte Carlo

Lucien Delarue was born on November 10th, 1925 in Paris. He studied at the studios of Grande Chaumiere, Paris.  He is best know as a French Impressionist. He loved to paint the streets of Paris with its stunning architecture and beauty. Also included in his repertoire is colorful French floral still life paintings, county cottages, harbor views, and river scenes.

At a very early age Delarue  began taking part in exhibitions. Quickly he was talking medals for his works including first prize and the Vermeil-Medaille at the Salon Violet. Other gold medals include the Salon of Vincennes, and the Salon of Clichy (1973).  In 1974 he won the silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Francais, and  a bronze medal at the "Arts-Sciences-Lettres" exhibition in Paris. 71.8 × 71.8 cm (2.3 × 2.3 ft)
Mead Art Museum,  Amherst, Massachusetts

Winslow Homer (February 24, 1836 – September 29, 1910) was an American landscape painter and printmaker, best known for his marine subjects. He is considered one of the foremost painters in 19th-century America and a preeminent figure in American art.

Largely self-taught, Homer began his career working as a commercial illustrator.[1] He subsequently took up oil painting and produced major studio works characterized by the weight and density he exploited from the medium. He also worked extensively in watercolor, creating a fluid and prolific oeuvre, primarily chronicling his working vacations. More on Winslow Homer

View of Ischia with the Aragonese castle
Oil on canvas
64.5 x 89cm (25 3/8 x 35 1/16in).
Private collection

Ischia is a volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It lies at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples, about 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the city of Naples. It is the largest of the Phlegrean Islands). It is almost entirely mountainous; the highest peak is Mount Epomeo, at 788 metres (2,585 feet).[2] The island is very densely populated, with 60,000 residents .

Ischia's main industry is centering on thermal spas that cater mostly to European (especially German) and Asian tourists eager to enjoy the fruits of the island's natural volcanic activity, its hot springs, and its volcanic mud. More on Ischia

Aragonese Castle (Italian: Castello Aragonese) is a medieval castle next to Ischia (one of the Phlegraean Islands), at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples, Italy.[1] The castle stands on a volcanic rocky islet that connects to the larger island of Ischia by a causeway (Ponte Aragonese).

The Aragonese Castle was built by Hiero I of Syracuse in 474 BC. At the same time, two towers were built to control enemy fleets' movements. The rock was then occupied by Parthenopeans (the ancient inhabitants of Naples). In 326 BC the fortress was captured by Romans, and then again by the Parthenopeans. In 1441 Alfonso V of Aragon connected the rock to the island with a stone bridge instead of the prior wood bridge, and fortified the walls in order to defend the inhabitants against the raids of pirates.

Around 1700, about 2000 families lived on the islet, including a Poor Clares convent, an abbey of Basilian monks (of the Greek Orthodox Church), the bishop and the seminar, the prince with a military garrison. There were also thirteen churches. In 1809, the British troops laid siege to the island, under the French command, and shelled to destroy almost completely. In 1912, the Castle was sold to a private owner. Today the castle is the most visited monument of the island. More on The Aragonese Castle

Oswald Achenbach (2 February 1827 – 1 February 1905) was a German painter associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. Though little known today, during his lifetime he was counted among the most important landscape painters of Europe. Through his teaching activities, he influenced the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. His brother, Andreas Achenbach, who was twelve years older, was also among the most important German landscape painters of the 19th century. More on Oswald Achenbach

Samuel Owen, (1769 - 8 December 1857)
Unloading the catch
Watercolour
14 x 19cm; 5½ x 7½in
Private collection

Samuel Owen (1769 - 8 December 1857) was an English marine painter and illustrator. Nothing is recorded of him before 1791, when he exhibited "A Sea View" at the Royal Academy. This was followed in 1797, after the victory of Cape St. Vincent, by "A View of the British and Spanish Fleets", and, in 1799, by three drawings. These, with three other drawings exhibited in 1802 and 1807, complete the number of his exhibits at the Royal Academy.

In 1808 he joined the "Associated Artists in Water-Colours", and sent eleven drawings of shipping and marine subjects to the first exhibition of that short-lived body. He also exhibited twelve works in 1809, and six in 1810, but after that date resigned his membership. His works were carefully drawn and freshly coloured, with great attention to the details of shipping.

Owen died at Sunbury in Surrey, on the 8th December 1867, in his 89th year, but had long before ceased to practise his art. More on Samuel Owen

Pierre Bonnard
Plage, circa 1922
Oil on canvas
13 3/4 x 24 1/4 in. (35 x 61.7 cm.)
Private collection

Pierre Bonnard (3 October 1867 — 23 January 1947) was a French painter and printmaker, as well as a founding member of the Post-Impressionist group of avant-garde painters Les Nabis. Bonnard preferred to work from memory, using drawings as a reference, and his paintings are often characterized by a dreamlike quality. The intimate domestic scenes, for which he is perhaps best known, often include his wife Marthe de Meligny.

Bonnard has been described as "the most thoroughly idiosyncratic of all the great twentieth- century painters", and the unusual vantage points of his compositions rely less on traditional modes of pictorial structure than voluptuous color, poetic allusions and visual wit. Identified as a late practitioner of Impressionism in the early 20th century, Bonnard has since been recognized for his unique use of color and his complex imagery. More on Pierre Bonnard

Edward William Cooke
A pilot boat off the North Foreland
Oil on board
18 x 29cm; 7 x 11½in
Private collection

A pilot boat is used to transport maritime pilots between land and the inbound or outbound ships that they are piloting.

North Foreland[ is a chalk headland on the Kent coast of southeast England; it forms the eastern end of the Isle of Thanet. It presents a bold cliff to the sea, and commands views over the southern North Sea.

Edward William Cooke, R.A., F.R.S., F.Z.S., F.S.A., F.G.S. (27 March 1811 – 4 January 1880) was an English landscape and marine painter, and gardener. Cooke was born in Pentonville, London. He was raised in the company of artists. He was a precocious draughtsman and a skilled engraver from an early age, displayed an equal preference for marine subjects and published his "Shipping and Craft" – a series of accomplished engravings – when he was 18, in 1829. Cooke began painting in oils in 1833, and first exhibited at the Royal Academy and British Institution in 1835, by which time his style was essentially formed.

He went on to travel and paint with great industry at home and abroad, indulging his love of the 17th-century Dutch marine artists with a visit to the Netherlands in 1837. He returned regularly over the next 23 years, studying the effects of the coastal landscape and light, as well as the works of the country's Old Masters, resulting in highly successful paintings. He went on to travel in Scandinavia, Spain, North Africa and, above all, to Venice. In 1858, he was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Honorary Academician. . More Edward William Cooke
